Modeling Love Dynamics

This book shows, for the very first time, how love stories — a vital issue in our lives — can be tentatively described with classical mathematics. Focus is on the derivation and analysis of reliable models that allow one to formally describe the expected evolution of love affairs from the initial state of indifference to the final romantic regime. The models are in full agreement with the basic philosophical principles of love psychology. Eight chapters are theoretically oriented and discuss the romantic relationships between important classes of individuals identified by particular psychological traits. The remaining chapters are devoted to case studies described in classical poems or in worldwide famous films. Contents:Can We Model Love Stories?Simple Models:Linear Models and Their PropertiesCouples Composed of Secure and Unbiased IndividualsRoxane and CyranoThe Discovery of Hidden Components of the AppealCouples Composed of Insecure and Unbiased IndividualsScarlett and RhettRomantic CyclesKathe and JulesKathe and JimComplex Models:Environmental Stress and Romantic ChaosExtra Emotional DimensionsLaura and FrancescoTriangular Love Stories and UnpredictabilityKathe, Jules, and Jim Readership: Undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and academics in applied mathematics; systems analysts, theoretical psychologists and social scientists. Key Features:First book ever on the mathematical treatment of the evolution of love affairsShows how mathematics can be used with the modeling approach to deal with artistic issues concerning loveUnique from the very few publications on the topic — the elegant jargon typical of social sciences as well as the hermetic formalism of mathematics are strictly avoidedKeywords:Mathematical Modeling;Nonlinear Dynamics;Interpersonal Relationships;Sociology;Psychology "It was certainly not an easy task to write for applied mathematicians and for sociologists and psychologists at the same time, but the authors succeeded in satisfying both sides of the spectrum. The result is a well organized and easily understandable book that I read with great pleasure, not only because of its content but also for its wonderful outlay. A series of pictures showing famous heroes and interesting stories illustrate love affairs in a nice manner." Gustav Feichtinger University of Technology, Vienna

Incorporating Applications and Innovations in Intelligent Systems XVIII Proceedings of AI-2010, The Thirtieth SGAI International Conference on Innovative Techniques and Applications of Artificial Intelligence

The papers in this volume are the refereed papers presented at AI-2010, the Thirtieth SGAI International Conference on Innovative Techniques and Applications of Artificial Intelligence, held in Cambridge in December 2010 in both the technical and the application streams. They present new and innovative developments and applications, divided into technical stream sections on Intelligent Agents; Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining; Evolutionary Algorithms, Bayesian Networks and Model-Based Diagnosis; Machine Learning; Planning and Scheduling, followed by application stream sections on Applications of Machine Learning I and II; AI for Scheduling and AI in Action. The volume also includes the text of short papers presented as posters at the conference. This is the twenty-seventh volume in the Research and Development in Intelligent Systems series, which also incorporates the eighteenth volume in the Applications and Innovations in Intelligent Systems series. These series are essential reading for those who wish to keep up to date with developments in this important field.
