Language Development and Disorders: A Case Study Approach

Prepare your students for clinical interactions with this one-of-a-kind guide! Special education and speech/language therapy students need to know how to apply their knowledge in practical settings to effectively prepare for and practice in their future careers as professionals. The use of case studies in this text will allow students to discuss and apply their knowledge in controlled settings to prepare them for real-life clinical applications. The problem-based instruction format is the best method for building students' knowledge while enhancing critical thinking skills in preliminary application situations. This book provides informational chapters containing overview information related to speech and language development and speech and language disorders followed by transcribed real-life case studies of both typical and atypical speech and language development. When possible, the companion audio or visual recordings provide additional information to the transcribed examples. By reading transcribed conversations of students at various ages, readers will be able to identify components of language development as well as intricate issues that may arise when a disorder is present. Every student should have this book!

LSA is a tool that can be used to determine language functioning of a child within
the natural educational environment by measuring the development and
accuracy of language used in a variety of communication contexts (Miller, Long,
McKinley, Thormann, Jones, & Nockerts, 2005). Language sample analysis, as a
method of assessment, is designed to gather a representative sample of the
child's spontaneous language so that an analysis can be made regarding the
child's language ...

A Cognitive Approach to Language Learning

This book addresses issues such as the relation of form to meaning, the relevance of SLA research, and the validity of task-based learning. It also contrasts universalist accounts of language learning and individual differences between learners.

testing. At the outset, though, we will look at the problems of assessment as they
have been conceived by testers themselves. In general terms, a test is a
systematic method of eliciting performance which is intended to be the basis for
some sort of decision making, although this is not to deny that many tests are not
terribly systematic, elicit fairly questionable language performance, and do not
lead to any decisions being made. Testers, in other words, argue for care and
standardization ...

Autonomics Development: A Domain-Specific Aspect Language Approach

Distributed applications are difficult to write as programmers need to adhere to specific distributed systems programming conventions and frameworks, which makes distributed systems development complex and error prone and ties the resultant application to the distributed system because the application's code is tangled with the crosscutting concern distribution. This book introduces the concept of a domain-specific aspect language called a Distribution Definition Language that generalises the distribution and distribution recovery concerns by describing the classes and methods of an existing application to be made remote, the distributed system to use to make them remote and the recovery mechanism to use in the event of an error. A software tool in the form of the RemoteJ compiler/generator that uses information contained in the Distribution Definition Language to generate the recovery and distributed system specific code and apply it to the application using bytecode manipulation and generation techniques is introduced. By allowing distribution and autonomic features, such as recovery, to be modularised and applied to existing applications this approach greatly simplifies distributed systems and autonomics development. This book is of particular interest to researchers and students of distributed systems, autonomics, domain-specific aspect languages and aspect-orientation.

A Dynamic Approach to Second Language Development

Methods and Techniques

applied linguistics. --Book Jacket.

Introduction Chapters 3–6 in this bookhave presented methods and techniques
in applying DST to second language analysis that are not commonly known yet.
Therefore, we decided to include a very practical How to chapter in which we
explain each method and technique in detail. Some of these How to sections
contain instructions for those who have little or no experience with Excel and
others are quite advanced. For most of the How to sections, we put practice
materials on our ...

An Intercultural Approach to English Language Teaching

Intercultural language education has redefined the modern languages agenda in Europe and North America. Now intercultural learning is also beginning to impact on English Language Teaching. This accessible book introduces teachers of EFL to intercultural language education by describing its history and theoretical principles, and by giving examples of classroom tasks.

In the later 1980s there was a movement towards teaching foreign languages
through a variety of topics, and, at its most radical, through instruction in some
other discipline – in a some schools a subject such as Geography was taught
through a modern language, such as French. At its logical extreme, ... Indeed,
Valdes (1990: 20) argues that any method of language teaching and learning is
inevitably cultural: From the first day of the beginning class, culture is at the
forefront. Whatever ...

Psychopedia, a suggestopedic approach to language learning

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Paderborn (Institut für Anglistik), course: Alternative Methods of Language Teaching, 4 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: As our world becomes more and more globalized, the importance of learning a foreign language increases. In Germany English is already taught in elementary school to give the pupils a basic knowledge concerning the English language. The whole society is involved into a constant change of working and living habits. Changes occur in industry, school and prerequisites to find a job as well as in fam-ily life and personal relationships. This development has got influences on every part of human life and so as well on the sector of education. As a result of this, teachers at school have to adjust their teaching methods to the changing condi-tions of the environment. As a society needs an atmosphere which favours change, it is necessary to be willing to change oneself. Not to change would result in keep-ing the faults which have been made in the past. You need to take the risk of change if the public weal should grow. Change should not only be pretended or take only place at the surface but also on the basis of the assumptions concerning learning . During the years several methods have been developed to make learning a new and foreign language more and more interesting, easy and efficient. In the begin-ning the most frequent methods were those of pattern drills, grammar exercise as well as the method of translation. These techniques are still used in some kind of schools and in some lessons, but the range of methods which is available for the teacher has grown to a large amount. The first new methods have been for exam-ple those related to the Total Physical Response method, which should not be de-scribed any further in this paper. The approaches which have been developed got more and more creative and are more and more in favor for the individual learning prerequisites of the pupils. Some of these methods are for example the method of the Silent Way, the Psycodramaturgie Linguistique and the suggestopedic ap-proach. The method for language learning, which is the topic of this paper, is a variation of the suggestopedic method which is called Psychopedia. In the following, there a description of the method of Suggestopedia will be pre-sented, which will be the basis for the description of the psychopedic approach. In the end there will be a conclusion which will include some future references for the use of Psychopedia in today’s school lessons.
