Metodologi studi Islam tampaknya mengalami pergeseran yang cukup signifikan, khususnya pada sekitar paruh abad ke-20. Penyebabnya ialah fakta bahwa Islam dikaji oleh muslim (insider) atau nonmuslim (outsider), khususnya orientalis, yang sedikit banyak dipengaruhi secara sosiologis oleh cara pandang, dan pengalaman manusia Barat, serta secara saintifik oleh perkembangan metodologi penelitian dalam ilmu-ilmu sosial di Barat. Metodologi orientalis tersebut secara perlahan memengaruhi metodologi studi Islam. Hal ini karena timbulnya kecenderungan di kalangan cendekiawan muslim untuk belajar kepada orientalis di Barat, atau membanjirnya buku-buku orientalis sebagai alternatif bacaan cendekiawan muslim. Dalam situasi seperti ini, studi Islam dengan pendekatan tradisional sudah tercampur, bahkan tersaingi oleh pendekatan orientalis. Untuk mengatasi persoalan tersebut maka buku ini hadir. Kajian dalam buku ini mencoba melakukan “pemetaan” terhadap studi Islam yang dilakukan oleh muslim (insider) atau nonmuslim (outsider).
