Brodsky Translating Brodsky: Poetry in Self-Translation

Winner of the Anna Balakian Prize 2016 Is poetry lost in translation, or is it perhaps the other way around? Is it found? Gained? Won? What happens when a poet decides to give his favorite Russian poems a new life in English? Are the new texts shadows, twins or doppelgangers of their originals-or are they something completely different? Does the poet resurrect himself from the death of the author by reinterpreting his own work in another language, or does he turn into a monster: a bilingual, bicultural centaur? Alexandra Berlina, herself a poetry translator and a 2012 Barnstone Translation Prize laureate, addresses these questions in this new study of Joseph Brodsky, whose Nobel-prize-winning work has never yet been discussed from this perspective.

There was no need to introduce “Joseph Brodsky” into the Russian language; he
was close enough to “Iosif Brodskiy” in terms of poetic diction. Translating one's

Respect Yourself

Stax Records and the Soul Explosion

The story of Stax Records unfolds like a Greek tragedy. A white brother and sister build a record company that becomes a monument to racial harmony in 1960's segregated south Memphis. Their success is startling, and Stax soon defines an international sound. Then, after losses both business and personal, the siblings part, and the brother allies with a visionary African-American partner. Under integrated leadership, Stax explodes as a national player until, Icarus-like, they fall from great heights to a tragic demise. Everything is lost, and the sanctuary that flourished is ripped from the ground. A generation later, Stax is rebuilt brick by brick to once again bring music and opportunity to the people of Memphis. Set in the world of 1960s and '70s soul music, Respect Yourself is a story of epic heroes in a shady industry. It's about music and musicians -- Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett, the Staple Singers, and Booker T. and the M.G.'s, Stax's interracial house band. It's about a small independent company's struggle to survive in a business world of burgeoning conglomerates. And always at the center of the story is Memphis, Tennessee, an explosive city struggling through heated, divisive years. Told by one of our leading music chroniclers, Respect Yourself brings to life this treasured cultural institution and the city that created it.

Years later, the song “Respect Yourself” galvanized a race of people that had
tailspun across America in search of validation. A cry for healing, the song rivaled
the “Negro National Anthem” for viability as an AfricanAmerican theme ...

Sparks fly in this New Adult romance of celebrity love on a college campus! A month after losing her mother, Avery Edwards arrives on campus alone and shattered, hoping only to make it through the year and stay under the radar. Until she meets Declan Hargrove, ex-teen heartthrob and campus celebrity, who just so happens to be her Resident Advisor. With dark hair and striking blue eyes, Declan definitely lives up to the rumors. Unfortunately, so does his reputation. The night before Avery arrived on campus, Declan was caught with his pants down. Literally. The "Stairwell Video", as everyone dubs the sex tape, only makes Declan more desirable on campus, while it turns the girl into an instant pariah. Livid at the double standard, Avery does everything she can to stay away from him, which is easier said than done since they live in the same building...and considering the rumors definitely weren't exaggerating about his amazing abs either. But when they finally stop denying the chemistry between them--in a closet at a frat party, no less-- Avery panics and throws Declan under the bus in front of an audience ready to record them for posterity on Instagram. But Avery's mistake on social media will affect more than just their social life. Turns out rumors don't always tell the truth, and when a new movie deal threatens to take Declan away from school, Avery must decide if opening her heart is worth falling for a star.
