Traduite et publiée dans le monde entier, l'œuvre de Khalil Gibran reste relativement méconnue de la critique universitaire. En France, des décennies après son introduction par Pierre Loti et André Gide, elle demeure encore discréditée à tort et identifiée à un mélange de théosophie et de panthéisme. Cette méprise est le fruit de sa nature paradoxale et d'une cruelle méconnaissance du monachisme syriaque. Ses textes puisent leur sève aux sources mêmes du christianisme oriental, non exempts d'une influence soufie. Ecrits en arabe jusqu'en 1923, ils ont contribué à rénover de manière radicale la littérature du Proche-Orient en l'intronisant dans l'ère du modernisme. Rédigés en anglais à partir de 1918, ils ont conféré au pragmatisme américain une nouvelle dimension spirituelle. Le maqam, généralement traduit par " séance ", désigne une fable, aux règles strictement dictées par la poétique arabe, aux frontières de l'oralité, de la musicalité et de la mystique. Khalil Gibran a su réinvestir cette structure narrative d'une forme et d'un contenu revivifiés. En tant qu'araméen de culture maronite, il propose dans ses écrits de jeunesse un projet de refonte de l'idiome et de la littérature arabe qui visent à adapter les thèmes et expressions classiques aux changements en cours dans la société, développant de la sorte une conception thérapeutique de la langue et du récit. À ce jour, peu d'études se sont penchées sérieusement, avec les outils d'analyse appropriés, sur la fable gibranienne. C'est du point de vue phénoménologique et à l'aune de la théologie et de la sémiotique que les Esprits rebelles (1908) et les Ailes brisées (1912) s'offrent comme corpus sur lequel une définition de la fable mystique sera tentée. Qu'est-ce qui fait qu'un texte littéraire porte, dans un contexte de réception donné, une parole perçue comme spirituelle ? Comment cette spiritualité engendrée par la religion se distingue-t-elle de ses institutions ? Comment la foi se présente-t-elle intimement liée à un programme national ? Ces questions, moteurs de la réflexion, vont être explorées à travers deux univers hérités du christianisme oriental et de l'Islam l'hérésie et l'ésotérisme.
