The Valley of the Kings

A Site Management Handbook

During the New Kingdom (c. 1570–1070 BCE), the Valley of the Kings was the burial place of Egypt’s pharaohs, including such powerful and famous rulers as Amenhotep III, Rameses II, and Tutankhamen. They were buried here in large and beautifully decorated tombs that have become among the country’s most visited archaeological sites. The tourists contribute millions of badly needed dollars to Egypt’s economy. But because of inadequate planning, these same visitors are destroying the very tombs they come to see. Crowding, pollution, changes in the tombs’ air quality, ever-growing tourist infrastructure—all pose serious threats to the Valley’s survival. This volume, the result of twenty-five years of work by the Theban Mapping Project at the American University in Cairo, traces the history of the Valley of the Kings and offers specific proposals to manage the site and protect its fragile contents. At the same time, it recognizes the need to provide a positive experience for the thousands of visitors who flock here daily. This is the first major management plan developed for any Egyptian archaeological site, and as its proposals are implemented, they offer a replicable model for archaeologists, conservators, and site managers throughout Egypt and the region. Published in both English and Arabic editions and supported by the World Monuments Fund, this critical study will help to ensure the survival of Egypt’s patrimony in a manner compatible with the country’s heavy reliance on tourism income.

As we have demonstrated in the preceding chapters, the greatest threats facing
the Valley of the Kings today are a result of its popularity with visitors. To tackle
the complex problems caused by such huge numbers of visitors, we have to
identify the causes, and develop plans to manage the Valley in ways that will
mitigate tourism's adverse effects. For example, we need to calculate how many
people can safely visit the Valley in a single day; how many can visit in one hour;
how tourists ...

Work Based Learning in Health Care: Applications and innovations

This book is about sharing knowledge and practice. It arose from a conference that was hosted by the Work Based Learning and Accreditation Unit of the School of Health and Social Sciences at Middlesex University. We believed that as a Unit and within the University we have the expertise and experience to make a significant contribution to the debates surrounding the development and implementation of work based learning in health care. However, we were also aware that we are by no means alone in this and that excellent work is being developed and practised in many other universities and organisations: and so the idea of the conference as a platform from which to share knowledge and practice was born. Whilst this book doesn’t provide a ‘how to’ guide, it addresses a topic that has become increasingly important in government, business and edu- cation: the role of the workplace in the generation of knowledge in a complex and changing society. The book presents a range of ideas and practice that cross many of the debates in work based learning including the student experience, the organisational experience of accreditation and professional impact as well as academic and policy reviews. As such, we believe that those who are experienced in work based learning and those who are just beginning to think about it will find something here to stimulate thinking and the development of new ideas.

A major criticism ofthe Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities of
the NHS was the history of 'single loop' learning (Davies & Nutley 2000). This
type of learning encourages task orientation which does little to drive a learning
organisation (Flood & Romm 1996), or to develop a rules based personto
become anenquiring practitioner capable of contributing to shared visions and
driving change. Some critics have suggested the need for more double loop
learning (Davies ...

The Road to Tahrir

Front Line Images by Six Young Egyptian Photographers

"As the 25 January Revolution got under way and grew from strength to strength, six young Egyptian photographers found themselves following and documenting the events in different parts of Cairo, and converging-as the demonstrations converged-on what became the focal point of the revolution, Tahrir Square. Between them they photographed many of the unprecedented and startling events around the city and in the square, from the early battles of the protesters against heavily armed security forces, through the attacks by paid thugs on camel and horseback, and the peaceful occupation of Tahrir Square, to the victory celebrations and the inspiring clean-up afterward. Together in this stunning visual record they present the days of the Revolution in sequence, from tear gas to tears of joy, picturing a story of determination and courage that inspired the world."--Publisher's website.

Museums and Design Education

Looking to Learn, Learning to See

How can museum educators and higher education tutors enhance the way HE students use museums? There are many examples in the UK of museums and universities working together in productive and innovative ways, but these relationships tend to be based on individual enthusiasm and opportunistic arrangements. Despite the growing importance of museum education departments, higher education tends to be overlooked by museums. This book looks at the interaction between design students and museums, and explores issues, projects and emerging ideas about how museums can better support HE students. It illustrates the general lessons that can be learnt, both strategic and practical, which can help to bring about long-term and constructive relationships between museums and universities in order to enable effective student learning.

Learning settingsfor design education have followed a predictable pattern. There
has been some appreciation by design educators of the value to the learning
process of industry and workplace experiences, and thecurriculum of mostdesign
