Dialogue, Science and Academic Writing

This book investigates the dialogic nature of research articles from the perspective of discourse analysis, based on theories of dialogicity. It proposes a theoretical and applied framework for the understanding and exploration of scientific dialogicity. Focusing on some dialogic components, among them citations, concession, inclusive we and interrogatives, a combined model of scientific dialogicity is proposed, that reflects the place and role of various linguistic structures against the background of various theoretical approaches to dialogicity. Taking this combined model as a basis, the analysis demonstrates how scientific dialogicity is realized in an actual scientific dispute and how a scientific project is constructed step by step by means of a dialogue with its readers and discourse community. A number of different patterns of scientific dialogicity are offered, characterized by the different levels of the polemic held with the research world and other specific researchers – from the “classic”, moderate and polite dialogicity to a direct and personal confrontation between scientists.

Teaching writing in the African American classroom

a sociolinguistic approach

This study evaluates the outcomes of a ten-week elementary language arts curriculum designed to improve the writing achievement and experiences of children who speak African American Vernacular English (AAVE). The curriculum integrated sociolinguistic research with contemporary language arts pedagogy, using multicultural children's literature to teach about regional and social language variation, and incorporating dialect-based grammar instruction (contrastive analysis) into the writing process. Six upper-elementary teachers in an urban school district in Ohio participated in a workshop on sociolinguistic diversity and subsequently implemented the curriculum with 76 students. Student outcomes were compared with two groups of students in the same school district: three classes (41 students) that participated in a partial intervention and four classes (58 students) that received no intervention.

Learning and Teaching Genre

This collection examines academic genres - types of writing produced by students in secondary school and college - from the perspective of genre as social action. Such a perspective expands the understanding of what students do when they learn new school genres, of what teachers and institutions do to enhance and constrain such learning, and of what all this signifies for conceptions of writing pedagogy. The book begins with an overview of the reconception of genre study. The essays that follow have an interest in genre, particularly those that appear in educational settings as instances of either student reading or writing. Common motifs recur throughout: questions are raised concerning learning and teaching new genres, the ideological power of genres read and written, and the power of the teacher, curriculum planner, or student to invent new genres or to resist and subvert those that exist. Throughout, the contributors give detailed accounts of successful classroom practices. Learning and Teaching Genre brings recent developments in research and thinking about written genres to the attention of high school and college teachers, and illustrates how that work can effectively inform classroom practice.
