Teori merupakan hasil dari kristalisasi fenomena empiris, yang diambil dari berbagai riset, dan sampai pada suatu kesimpulan yang bersifat universal, logis, konsisten, prediktif, dan objektif. Teori akuntansi dapat dirumuskan sebagai suatu susunan konsep, definisi, dan dalil yang menyajikan secara sistemati s gambaran tentang fenomena akuntansi, serta menjelaskan hubungan antarvariabel dalam struktur akuntansi, dengan maksud untuk dapat memprediksi fenomena yang muncul (yaitu fenomena sosial dan ekonomi).
