Why Privacy Isn't Everything

Feminist Reflections on Personal Accountability

Accountability protects public health and safety, facilitates law enforcement, and enhances national security, but it is much more than a bureaucratic concern for corporations, public administrators, and the criminal justice system. In Why Privacy Isn't Everything, Anita L. Allen provides a highly original treatment of neglected issues affecting the intimacies of everyday life, and freshly examines how a preeminent liberal society accommodates the competing demands of vital privacy and vital accountability for personal matters. Thus, 'None of your business ' is at times the wrong thing to say, as much of what appears to be self-regarding conduct has implications for others that should have some bearing on how a person chooses to act. The book addresses such questions as, What does it mean to be accountable for conduct? For what personal matters am I accountable, and to whom? Allen concludes that the sticky webs of accountability that encase ordinary life are flexible enough to accommodate egalitarian moral, legal and social practices that are highly consistent with contemporary feminist reconstructions of liberalism.

It is worth noting, however, that people also lie to protect the privacy of others.
They lie attempting to conceal facts about others' affairs. President Clinton's
secretary, Betty Currie, may have done this. We lie sometimes to protect our
friends, members of our families, or our lovers. We may also lie because we
believe that we have a professional duty to guard zealously the confidentiality of
personal, business, legal, and medical information about other people. Public

Action Research

An Educational Leader's Guide to School Improvement

Action Research: An Educational Leader’s Guide to School Improvement, Third Edition, is a clear and practical guide to conducting action research in schools. Although it offers neither a cookbook nor a quick-fix approach, this book does outline the process of designing and reporting an action research project. Useful as a classroom text as well as a self-teaching tool, Action Research: An Educational Leader’s Guide to School Improvement is a comprehensive training manual. It can be used by practitioners in the field, by graduate students enrolled in leadership and/or master’s thesis courses, or by anyone interested in learning how to conduct action research projects, including classroom teachers ,who are leaders too in their own right. The strategies and techniques of action research described are no different for teachers than they are for administrators. The underlying assumption of this work is that research is not a domain only for academics, it is also a powerful approach that can be used by practitioners to contribute to school renewal and instructional improvement. Rather than being merely a philosophical treatise or theoretical analysis, Action Research provides concrete strategies and techniques for conducting action research in schools.

Too many teacher-administrator leadership programs attempt to teach
prospective school leaders quantitative research approaches that have little if
any relevance to their work in the field. Action researchers may not use all or

The quest for community and identity

critical essays in Africana social philosophy

This collection of essays engages two of the most fundamental social and political issues of our time: community and identity. Wrestling with the perplexities of these two issues within the Africana world, the contributors delve into the influences of a postmodern world of globalization with outdated, crumbling forms of identity and sociality. In the wake of such an order, new forms of identity and community must be established.

The Intersection of Library Learning and Second-Language Learning

Theory and Practice

Language learning and library learning in a university setting are closely related endeavors that intersect at various times and locations, and with various teachers and learners. This book is an examination of how these intersections are experienced by language learners. Its aim is to explore the two types of learning to help sustain and develop the learning in both areas. The Intersection of Library Learning and Second-Language Learning: Theory and Practice is aimed at practitioners, both librarians and language instructors, and describes everyday scenarios which will resonate with academic librarians and language instructors. It presents practical experiences and accompanies them with a consideration of the literature of both librarianship and language education. It reviews and evaluates professional practices employed by working librarians and language instructors in their dealings with international students. Considerations of the intersections between language learning and library learning are placed within a theoretical framework of learner autonomy. This framework offers librarians and language instructors methods and practices that enable students to take control of their learning in the areas of both language learning and library learning. A concluding chapter offers ways to connect the framework of learner autonomy to settings outside that of a university context.

Language learning, in contrast to library learning, is a widely accepted term in the
theory and practice of language education. It invokes a complete array of differing
conceptions as to its meaning. In fact, the question, what is language learning, ...

An Educator's Guide to Better Understanding the Personal Side of Students' Lives is a road map on how the education community can elevate the teacher's advising role, the most underutilized helping resource in the school, to its rightful place as the primary source of academic and non-academic help for students.
