Ibn Taimiya's Struggle Against Popular Religion

With an Annotated Translation of His Kitab iqtida as-sirat al-mustaqim mukhalafat ashab al-jahim

The series Religion and Society (RS) contributes to the exploration of religions as social systems – both in Western and non-Western societies; in particular, it examines religions in their differentiation from, and intersection with, other cultural systems, such as art, economy, law and politics. Due attention is given to paradigmatic case or comparative studies that exhibit a clear theoretical orientation with the empirical and historical data of religion and such aspects of religion as ritual, the religious imagination, constructions of tradition, iconography, or media. In addition, the formation of religious communities, their construction of identity, and their relation to society and the wider public are key issues of this series.

A Study in Scarlet

A Play Based on the Novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Adapted from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first novel, "A Study in Scarlet" follows Sherlock Holmes and his faithful colleague, Dr. John Watson on their first case together. In this stage adaptation, Holmes is enlisted by Inspector Gregson, of Scotland Yard, to help investigate a mysterious murder that took place in an empty house. With no wounds on the body, nor any weapon to be found, and only a few clues to guide him, Holmes must track down the mysterious killer and bring them to justice. The play has a cast of 16 characters total, including 12 male roles and 4 female roles, and accommodates for doubling where needed, though doubling is not necessary. The play is perfect for high school and college performances as well as amateur, community theater, off-broadway and professional venues.

Sherlock Holmes on the Stage

A Chronological Encyclopedia of Plays Featuring the Great Detective

One of the world's most well known fictional characters, Sherlock Holmes first appeared in print in 1887. The detective was featured in four novels and 56 short stories written by his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Within a decade of his creation Sherlock Holmes made his theatrical debut, first in a couple of obscure productions and soon in the celebrated play adapted by and starring William Gillette. Through the 20th century and beyond, the fictional detective featured in dozens of plays, not to mention radio programs, films, and television shows. In Sherlock Holmes on Stage, Amnon Kabatchnik cites the many theatrical appearances of the great detective since his debut in a one-act musical satire in November 1893. Divided into three sections, this book focuses on plays written or cowritten by Conan Doyle, one-act productions, and plays written by other authors—either adaptations of the novels and stories or original works. Within these sections, each entry is arranged in chronological order and provides a plot synopsis, production details, and other unique features. Some entries identify principal actors and provide biographical sketches of the playwrights, as well as those actors who made a lasting impression as the fictional sleuth. The book also includes several appendixes that focus on special productions, plays that feature variations of the Holmes character, and a list of acting editions.

cinema as Sherlock Holmes from 1921 to 1925, a record that still stands, starred

Holmes by J. E. Harold Terry and J. Arthur Rose. The play opened at the Princess

Sherlock: The Casebook

This book is my humble attempt to shine a light on the work of the best and wisest I have ever known. He has, I think it is safe to say, elevated the science of detection into an art form. Having been at his side during some of his most remarkable cases, it has fallen to me to bring his achievements to the attention of the wider public. He is, quite simply, the Mozart of criminal investigation. I would say more, but I am flattered and delighted to say that Sherlock Holmes himself has agreed to write a piece for the cover. John Watson * Don’t buy this book. The author has transformed what should have been a series of lectures into a gross and tasteless entertainment. The science of deduction is a branch of human achievement requiring serious analysis and yet here I find it lavishly illustrated, disfigured with humour and infested with gossip. Apparently, this kind of sensationalism is required to engage the interest of the reading public, but it is rather like working an office romance into a paper on quantum physics. Only an idiot would be impressed. Help yourself. Sherlock Holmes
