Christ in Islam and Christianity

Christ in Islam and Christianity is an analysis of the different Christian approaches to Jesus in the Qur'an and in the classical Muslim commentaries. The author presents controversial suggestions about the relevance of the Qur'anic representation of Jesus and Mary to Muhammad and his menage. Included are extensive translations of extracts from classical Muslim commentaries including Sunni, Mu'tazilite, Shia, and Sufi. Much of the Muslim material which the author translates has not previously been translated into English.

In the next stage 'there was a growing interest in historical accounts' and the use
of 'gospel materials and hagiography'. In time there developed a preference for '
punishment substitutionism' which envisaged the crucifixion of the betrayer or of
the person sent to arrest Jesus. Finally by the sixth/ twelfth century there was an
attempt 'to interpret the entire passage in one complete story'. Ayoub seems to be

Christianity and Islam

An examination of the similarities and differences between Christianity and Islam, especially in the areas of ontology, philosophy and metaphysics. The integration of the heritages of Plato and Aristotle in the Church and in Islam is explored deftly and densely. This book invites adherents of Christianity and Islam to understand more deeply their own respective traditions and on this basis to understand and respect 'the other'. Several chapters are devoted to a comparison between both Sunnite Sufi and Shi'ite Gnostic esoteric traditions, especially in the area of Qur'anic exegesis. This book will be equally challenging and rewarding for the serious reader.

Maryam is the Umm al-Kitab on a “personal” plane, just as the Qur'an, typified by

Kitab, for the latter is “derived” from the Umm, being a reflection of the plenary
Mother containing all possibility. ... The stars are other suns (according to a

Modelling Early Christianity

Social-Scientific Studies of the New Testament in its Context

Modelling Early Christianity explores the intriguing foreign social context of first century Palestine and the Greco-Roman East, in which the Christian faith was first proclaimed and the New Testament documents were written. It demonstrates that a sophisticated analysis of the context is essential in order to understand the original meaning of the texts. The contributors examine social themes such as early Christian group formation, the centrality of kinship and honour and the economic setting. They offer a wealth of novel and socially realistic interpretations which make sense of the texts. At the same time, Modelling Early Christianity contains significant new ideas on the relationship between social-scientific and literary-critical analysis, the theoretical justification for model-use and the way these new approaches can fertilise contemporary Christian theology.

INTRODUCTION This essay is a continuation of my interests in warfare in the
Bronze Age and Iron Age and the literature related to it (Hobbs 1989a; Hobbs
and Jackson 1991). In this present form it is more an invitation to discourse than a
finished product, and will form the basis of further research. In my book on
warfare in ancient Israel (1989a) I wrote much in the concluding chapter about
