His full name was Ab 'Abdill h Mu ammad ibn 'Al ibn Mu ammad ibn Arab (' ). ibn 'Arab was born into a respectable family in the Spanish township of Murcia on 17th of Rama n 561 AH (27th or 28 July 1165 AD). Mu yiddin Mu ammad ibn 'Al ibn Mu ammad ibn 'Arab was widely known as al-Shaykh al-Akbar; in medieval Europe he was called Doctor Maximus. His father, 'Ali ibn Mu ammad, served in the Army of ibn Mardan sh. When ibn Mardan sh died in 1172 AD, 'Ali ibn Mu ammad swiftly shifted his allegiance to the Almohad Sultan, Ab Ya'q b Y suf I, and became one of his military advisers. His family then relocated from Murcia to Seville. ibn 'Arab 's dogmatic and intellectual training began in Seville, then the cultural and civilized center of Muslim Spain, in 578 AH.
