Port Alberni

More Than Just a Mill Town

Any community that has ever been labelled a "mill town" carries both the promise of prosperity and the constant threat of collapse, its fortune hinging on a single industry whose performance is as much related to the whims of a global economy as it is to the abundance of a key natural resource. The people of Port Alberni, located deep in Vancouver Island's Alberni Valley, know all too well the highs and lows that come with such a label. Jan Peterson, who lived in Port Alberni for two of the town's most tumultuous decades and worked as a reporter for the Alberni Valley Times, describes how the town's people persevered through three decades of boom and bust, developed a vibrant arts and sporting community, and strived to make life better under any circumstances. From the prosperous 1970s, when Port Alberni earned the reputation of "forestry capital of Canada," to the decline of the industry in the 1980s, when economic uncertainty signalled a need for diversification, to the environmental protests in nearby Clayoquot Sound, which polarized the community, Port Alberni tells the story of Port Alberni from a perspective that is rarely heard. Through fascinating interviews and meticulous historical research, Peterson captures the heart and soul of a town so often defined by dollars and cents.

Eventually the premier's office intervened and Zimmerman got a commitment

Social Marketing in the 21st Century

This text is well-grounded in scholarship, synthesizes a number of streams of thought, and then proposes thought-provoking applications for an existing approach to social and behavioral change through social marketing. It could be used with a number of courses and disciplines. The level of detail, use of various sources and the variety of examples make it appropriate for graduate level studies. It can also serve the social marketing or behavior change practitioner who wishes to enhance or expand his or her field of practice to include "upstream" approaches. - Written by a highly regarded academic in the Social Marketing community. - Encourages Social Marketers to think beyond the "downstream" market of individuals whose behavior they are trying to influence to include the "upstream" market of individuals whose participation is needed to make changes. - Utilizes and synthesizes a number of different strands of scholarship (the evolution of social problems, the science of framing, the process of social change, social marketing history and elements, etc.)

This text is well-grounded in scholarship, synthesizes a number of streams of thought, and then proposes thought-provoking applications for an existing approach to social and behavioral change through social marketing.

Design Education for a Sustainable Future

Sustainability is a powerful force that is fundamentally reshaping humanity’s relationship to the natural world and is ushering in the Age of Integration. The move from well-intentioned environmental friendliness to the higher bar of integral sustainability and regenerative design demands a new type of design professional, one that is deeply collaborative, ethically grounded, empathically connected and technologically empowered. As a response, this book argues for a great leap forward in design education: from an individualistic and competitive model casually focused on greening; to a new approach defined by an integral consciousness, shaped by the values of inclusivity and cooperation, and implemented by a series of integrative behaviors including: an ethically infused design brief a co-creative design process on-going value engineering pre-emptive engineering design validation through simulation on-line enabled integrated learning the use of well vetted rating systems. This book contains the integral frameworks, whole system change methodologies and intrinsic values that will assist professors and their students in an authentic and effective pursuit of design education for a sustainable future.

Pirqei deRabbi Eliezer: Structure, Coherence, Intertextuality

In Pirqei deRabbi Eliezer: Structure, Coherence, Intertextuality Katharina E. Keim offers a description of the literary character of Pirqei deRabbi Eliezer and throws light on a new turn in Jewish literature following the rise of Islam.

Fatima as a female name seems to be attested only in Arabic, so its Islamic
reference is hard to avoid. Indeed, could any Jewish reader of this Targum in the
early Islamic period have failed to pick up here in “Fatima from Egypt,” a sly

Clinical Pearls of Wisdom: 21 Leading Therapists Offer Their Key Insights

This book collects the 'best of the best' of leading therapists, who offer highlights from their years of practice as 'clinical pearls,' or nuggets of information for other therapists to use in clinical practice. Topics covered include all those that are most common to therapeutic settings: depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, and treatments for children, adolescents, and couples. Contributors offer case studies that best exemplify the 'pearls,' and how they were used in the course of treatment, with tools for assessment (often a key issue for therapists in determining their course of action) and descriptions of the treatment approaches used. The final section of the book, 'Concluding Remarks,' includes the contributors' thoughts on how they came to use the skills/pearls, how long it took them to develop, and what their key assumptions were.

Represented in this collection is the “take-away” message from some of the most popular conference presenters active in the field today.
