Anglo-American Relations

Contemporary Perspectives

This book provides an examination of contemporary Anglo-American relations. Sometimes controversially referred to as the Special Relationship, Anglo-American relations constitute arguably the most important bilateral relationship of modern times. However, in recent years, there have been frequent pronouncements that this relationship has lost its ‘specialness’. This volume brings together experts from Britain, Europe and North America in a long-overdue examination of contemporary Anglo-American relations that paints a somewhat different picture. The discussion ranges widely, from an analysis of the special relationship of culture and friendship, to an examination of both traditional (e.g. nuclear relations) and more recent (e.g. environment) policies. Contemporary developments are discussed in the context of longer-term trends and contributing authors draw upon a range of different disciplines, including political science, diplomacy studies, business studies and economics. Coupled with a substantive introduction and conclusion, the result is an insightful and engaging portrayal of the complex Anglo-American relationship. The book will be of great interest to students of US and UK foreign policy, diplomacy and international relations in general.

Introduction Anglo-American defence cooperation is a mainstay of the special
relationship. Its antecedents lie in World War 2 where intimate cooperation
developed from fighting a global war, Britain hosting large quantities of American

ART CONTEMPORAIN ET PLURALISME

Nouvelles perspectives

English Around the World

Sociolinguistic Perspectives

This volume looks at the little explored but increasingly important topic of the development of English as a world language. It gives a comprehensive account of our current knowledge of variation in the use of the English language around the world. Overview papers, written by specialist authors, survey the social context in which English is spoken in those parts of the world where it is widely used. Case study papers then provide representative examples of the empirical research that has been carried out into the English spoken in the areas covered by the overview. The volume therefore contributes both to our understanding of the English language worldwide and to a more general understanding of language as it is used in its social context. It assesses the extent of our current knowledge of variation in the English language and points to gaps in our understanding which future research might set out to remedy.

GREGORY R. GUY Introduction The English language is now completing 200
years of continuous usage in Australia. In that time it has supplanted the original
languages of the continent, and recruited most descendants of non-English
speaking immigrants, so that today it is the overwhelmingly dominant tongue
throughout Australia. Several features of the Australian situation yield a unique
insight on the development and diversification of English: its geographic isolation

The Unity of Mind, Brain and World

Current Perspectives on a Science of Consciousness

Issues concerning the unity of minds, bodies and the world have often recurred in the history of philosophy and, more recently, in scientific models. Taking into account both the philosophical and scientific knowledge about consciousness, this book presents and discusses some theoretical guiding ideas for the science of consciousness. The authors argue that, within this interdisciplinary context, a consensus appears to be emerging assuming that the conscious mind and the functioning brain are two aspects of a complex system that interacts with the world. How can this concept of reality - one that includes the existence of consciousness - be approached both philosophically and scientifically? The Unity of Mind, Brain and World is the result of a three-year online discussion between the authors who present a diversity of perspectives, tending towards a theoretical synthesis, aimed to contribute to the insertion of this field of knowledge in the academic curriculum.

A centrally located neural space organized as a rotation-based geometry is
partitioned into three nested zones around the egocentric origin: egocenter, body
zone (here represented by the head alone), and world zone. The latter two house
spatial maps supplied with veridical content reflecting circumstances pertaining
to the physical body and its surrounding world, respectively. In this mapping,
global sensory motion is reflected as movement of the body alone relative to the
