One Step at a Time

A Structured Programme for Teaching Spoken Language in Nurseries and Primary Schools

A unique tried-and-tested programme that: · identifies the spoken language skills that are crucial for children's educational progress · introduces these skills one at a time, week by week, term by term, year by year · sets out realistic teaching objectives and classroom procedures · supports differentiated teaching by providing simple methods for monitoring individual development and reviewing progress · provides a complete set of photocopiable planning materials. Using a mixture of whole-class teaching, small-group work and individual interaction, each step of the One Step at a Time programme focuses on one set of skills that is crucial for progress: Conversation - Nursery; Listening - Reception; Narrative - Year 1; Discussion - Year 2. There is also a preliminary step, Getting Started, for nursery children who are not ready for systematic work on conversation. One Step at a Time is specially designed to support the wider school curriculum and combine with other teaching programmes, making high quality spoken language teaching manageable within existing resources - without specialist training.
