Beyond Myself

The Farm Girl and the African Chief

When author Anita Katherine Dennis walked into the anthropology class during her sophomore year at Ohio University in 1964, she was sure the class would prove interesting. She had no idea how right she would be. In Beyond Myself, she narrates the love story that developed between her and her anthropology professor, Dr. Ben Dennis, an African tribal chief. In this memoir, she shares how God sustained her during her interracial, cross-cultural marriage—especially as she played the role of chief’s wife in a remote village in Liberia, West Africa. Her life was full of extremes. She met the president of Liberia in the Executive Mansion—and slept in a mud hut. She visited European capitals—and lived in a remote African village. She flew on transatlantic flights—and was carried through the high forest in a chief’s hammock. Anita shares her struggles as she is accepted into the Mende tribe and lived in Vahun with an off and on kerosene fridge, swarming termites on the screens, a cyclone barely missing the house, and pungent elephant meat delivered in the middle of the night. Beyond Myself offers an example of West meets Africa personified. Anita tells how life with Ben was more than a marriage. It was an education and adventure wrapped into one. Ben allowed Anita to escape her narrow cultural confines and embark on a journey from farm girl to global citizen, with plenty of missteps throughout. From the Kirkus Review: "....Dennis led a life filled with remarkable events and translated them into an entertaining memoir....overall she proves to be a storyteller with a keen eye for detail and fully re-creates the complexities of her marriage and the exciting challenges she faced in Africa. A cleareyed memoir about navigating fraught relationships and other cultures."

tiny brown lizard on the hallway floor and let out a scream. The cook from the

Wisdom is a Woman

Wisdom is a woman. That is not just my opinion or some new academic theory. Wisdom is a woman because the Bible tells us so. It tells us that wisdom is more than just a benefit or a characteristic. In the Bible, wisdom is sometimes a person. When so personified, wisdom is always a woman. Sometimes she is Lady Wisdom. Sometimes she is Madame Insight. Most often she goes incognito; yet the shadow she casts is always a female form. Perhaps it is this very tendency to eschew the spotlight that has allowed us to overlook her for so long. It has not helped that pastors, theologians, and Bible scholars have historically been men. And much of Scripture chronicles God's interaction with men, not women. But what if this centuries-long focus of and on men has had a subtle influence on Christian orthodoxy? What if some passages in Scripture remain unexplored, as undisturbed as the thick layer of dust that covers the top of every refrigerator in America? Wisdom Is a Woman examines just such dust-laden biblical passages. This is a journey of discovery that helps us look at things we thought we knew with fresh eyes. Luckily for us, we do not take this journey into dusty cupboards and overgrown gardens alone. Our guide throughout is Lady Wisdom, a formidable dame who knows every stone, tree root, and hidden pitfall along the way. She will take us back to the very beginnings of our world. We will focus for a time on Biblical women, from Eve to Priscilla. We will examine women in a general sense, looking for clues in our study of wisdom. We will visit the Proverbs 31 woman and tour Lady Wisdom's academy. Our journey will compare the lives and work of two wise Biblical men and end with a step-by-step correlation between women and wisdom.

Brain-Based Worship

A new understanding of learning based on the findings of neuroscience can propel the teaching ministry of the Church to new levels of effectiveness. Neuroscience is offering fresh insight into how humans learn. The resulting teaching paradigm--brain-based learning--is plotting a fresh model for teaching that is proving to make teaching more memorable, more applicable, and more likely to result in changed thought and behavior. It is also refusing to relegate learning to the brain as it re-enlists the human body as an instrument of learning. Entrusted with the teaching ministry of Jesus, no one needs to employ brain-based teaching methodology more than those who teach Christ crucified, yet in the course of our prime teaching time, the worship service, we often violate every guideline. This book is written to educate and empower those who plan worship to understand and use brain-based teaching strategies. "Paula Champion-Jones is a triple threat. She has been designing creative worship services for years, she has an enormous heart to see God's church succeed, and now she has the neuroscience to back up how she's invested her own creative gifts. You cannot go wrong by reading this book. It will open your eyes, give you new ideas, make you rethink stuff that needs rethinking...in short, it will teach the most experienced pastors and the most jaded churchgoers to see worship planning in an inspiring new way. I can't wait to assign it to students in my worship class!" --Laura K. Simmons, Professor of Christian Ministries, George Fox Seminary

One Woman, One God, and a Horse Named Cj-A Love Story

Happy trails to you until we meet again Having lived in the heart of the Kettle Moraine forest most of my adult life I have enjoyed riding my horse on the beautiful trails. I have sought to find answers for the disappointment and heartbreak I experienced through out so many years. If you are reading this book, you are holding in your hands the story of my life. I don't have any worldly accomplishments in front or behind my name but what I do have is the experience of wanting to be a great daughter, wife and mother. Wanting this and having this become a reality was two different things. The years spent both as a young girl and a young woman with many emotions to deal with caused me to have a very low self esteem. It was the brokenness that brought me to my knees on that cold January day.

Total gratitude and love goes to Collin my grandson in the pictures he took of C]

proud and grateful of you Collin. You did an awesome job in editing the final draft

A Life Committed to Its Intended Anchorage and Soar

The Harmony between Spiritual Principles and Sound Science

Who are we? Why are we here? What is the true meaning for our existence? Each of these questions provides a general intention to answer in this book. Questions about the purpose of life for human beings are not new as book topics for nonfiction-category book titles. Nevertheless, author Donald L. Yates’ interest in approaching this and similar, parallel questions is in investigating the links, ties, connections, and other illustrations of harmony, and balance between spiritual principles in their broadest sense and sound science. With such a discovery of connectedness and agreement between science and universal spiritual principles there are thus, the wider implications for humankind’s purpose in living and for other, larger questions of humankind’s behavior, actions, and existence. Moreover, this book is poised to add a particular, significant contribution to the ongoing debate between creationism and evolutionary theory in public education. And while the central theme most recently fostering the debate has been what constitutes good science, what is alleged as being the universal consensus within the scientific community of evolution theory “unqualified” merit is far from being an empirically verifiable credence. It is this author’s view that such an announced state of “universal” support for what has been described as “scientific consensus” on evolution theory has no basis in fact. For those who retain the literalist interpretations and beliefs of the origins of the universe as found in Genesis from the Bible, one should fine solace in the considerable evidence that this book brings to the “factual” basis for creationism, as the framework and foundation for the origins of the world and universe.

It’s Business, It’s Personal

From Setting a Vision to Delivering it Through Organizational Excellence

“It’s Business, It’s Personal is an appropriate reminder that building a successful and sustainable business depends on many interdependent factors, not just one latest ‘flavor of the month’ practice. Saad also reminds us of the vital importance of foundational values and principles guiding an organization. The book goes beyond the theory of business success but also provides very practical ‘how to’ guidance.” —Werner Geissler, Vice Chairman of Global Operations, Procter & Gamble “Mr. Saad brilliantly demonstrates the need for consumer-centric purpose as a basis for enduring business success. Equally important is his conviction that good organizational practice is rooted in a strong value system. Equipped with twenty-five years of hard-earned business experience at Procter & Gamble, the author goes beyond lofty principles and provides time-honored advice on how to turn a vision into a winning in-market execution.” —Peter Corijn, Vice President for the Regional Business Unit of Gillette, Procter & Gamble “I was proud to have worked with Saad and found him an effective leader—a most honest and dependable associate. A person I would like to work with in any assignment.” —Fouad Kraytem, President Middle East Africa and General Export (MEAGE), Procter & Gamble “Saad has captured a treasure trove of insights from his long career at P&G. Insights that contributed to the outstanding success of the subsidiaries he was an important part of. It is almost criminal that non-P&Gers are offered the opportunity to read and learn from this book!” —Philippe Bovay, Vice President/General Manager , Procter & Gamble Pakistan “Excellent synopsis of the entire business exercise of vision setting and its associated processes. Saad captures in tremendous detail the entire process and goes into great depth on how to drive organizational excellence without which the vision would be powerless. The key to executing this process with excellence is what I call BOF i.e. ‘Brutal Obsession with Fundamentals.” —Al Rajwani, Vice President Arabian Peninsula and Pakistan, Procter & Gamble

The Travelogue of a Visionary

Unveiling the Values of Vision

What does it mean to be a visionary? How do I shape my philosophy in vision? What does the value of vision look like? This book wears these answers on its sleeve. During a sabbatical from conceptual systems in pursuit of truth and wisdom, the secluded W.J. challenged himself to find the value of vision. This book is merely documented organically as W.J.’s open letter to the global community of visionaries. After a year reconstructing and establishing the values of vision, he persuasively argues the notion that transcendent truth is the credibility gap between the vanguard visionary and the emerging, digital, twenty-first-century visionary. This book has his practical and profound radically new approach to universal vision concerning epistemology, business ethics, and global issues.
