Anglo-American Awareness

Arpeggios in Aesthetics

This volume presents an Anglo-American research matrix radiating in various directions and transcending traditional academic boundaries and modes of perception. It offers a diverse and multi-facetted approach, covering topics from freemasonry to the documentaries of Michael Moore, from the Scottish best seller Trainspotting to German-American literature in the US, from anarchical traces in British novels to the influence of Laurence Sterne on Philipp Emanuel Bach, from postcolonial fiction to intercultural awareness, from Canadian literary beginnings to Casablanca Revisited. This collection of thirteen contributions reflects the scope, vitality and relevance of English and American Studies inside and outside the university.

The American topics of Moore's films, especially the exploitation of labor (Roger
and Me), gun violence (Bowling for Columbine) and the war on terror (Fahrenheit
9/11) are met in Germany with a new moral superiority emphasizing peace, the ...

The Euro, the Eurosystem and the European Economic and Monetary Union. Der Euro, Das Eurosystem und Die Europäische Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion

Reviews and Prospects of a Unified Currency. Rück- und Ausblicke Auf Eine Einheitliche Währung

About one decade has elapsed since the introduction of the Euro: Has the Euro proved to be a stable currency? Doubts might be left. Large segments of the financial system seem to be coming apart at the seams, bailout plans have been approved. Is even a withdrawal from the European Unification going to be likely? This sounds popular, but this may be an undertaking with an uncertain ending. The contributions do not intend to give rash answers. A strengthening of the Euro is necessary, and should be preferred to its abolition. To make the Euro fit for the future is the order of the day.

Modelling the Field of Community Interpreting

Questions of Methodology in Research and Training

The field of community interpreting is characterised by continually changing political, social, institutional and cultural contexts. Over the last few years new approaches to the training of community interpreters have been conceptualised to meet the requirements of these developments and to replace lay interpreters by trained interpreters. The contributions of this volume present both innovative models of didactics and curricula for community interpreters and empirically and methodologically challenging analyses of various fields of community interpreting.

The importance of effective communication becomes evident when a problem is
experienced and the language service delivery is not up to standard or if it comes
abruptly to a standstill. It becomes even more evident in an intercultural context
when communication takes the form of an extended communication activity, i.e.
extended in the sense that a language intermediary becomes involved.

Information Technology for the Virtual Museum

Museology and the Semantic Web

This present collection deals with the application of modern information technology, especially semantic web technologies, to the problems of representing cultural content in real and virtual museums. The Semantic Web is the attempt to make the World Wide Web's enormous mass of information more accessible to humans by using forms of representation which are semantically transparent and therefore 'understandable' to machines assisting human users when they access the web. The fascinating perspectives for museology which result from the new semantic techniques are dealt with in the present book.
