William Faulkner

Even though Yoknapatawpha County and the novels which brought it into existence are ultimately William Faulkner's imaginative creations, they have a very strong relationship to the American South, and Faulkner's home region in northern Mississippi in particular. This part of the United States underwent a transforming process of social change during Faulkner's life, and Faulkner monitored closely the disruptive consequences of the transformation of his region from a rural place, dominated by an agricultural economy to a "new" South, with a more diversified economy. He also observed the repercussions of this transformation in the form of social conflicts and contradictions. This study reads the Yoknapatawpha novels as Faulkner's literary response to the disruptive processes of social change and their consequences. It examines the influence of Faulkner's creative engagement with social change, especially the way the narrative and thematic structures of his Yoknapatawpha novels are shaped by the force of change in the areas of economy, gender, and race.

UFO Casebook

This book contains many of the most significant cases in UFO history. A UFO is defined as a mysterious object seen in the sky for which it is claimed no orthodox scientific explanation can be found, often supposed to be a vehicle carrying extraterrestrials. Scientists have tried to provide logical explanations for most UFO reports. For example, in many cases, a reported UFO later was identified as a meteor, a planet, a rocket, a star, an artificial satellite, or a weather balloon. Aircraft or their exhaust trails, seen under unusual lighting conditions, have also been reported as UFOs. In addition, atmospheric conditions may produce optical illusions that are described as UFOs. While reading this book, it must be understood that these are only unsolved UFO cases and therefore these in no way support the existence of UFOs. It is nonetheless very important to find suitable scientific evidence before drawing any conclusion on UFOs.

The Relationship Between Personality Types and Reward Preferences

The study confirmed that individuals with certain personality types and personality preferences, have different preferences for certain reward categories. There was a stronger relationship between reward preferences and personality preferences than for reward preferences and personality types. Preferences for reward categories by different demographic groups were confirmed. The significant difference in reward preferences between Black and White respondents in particular was noteworthy, with Black respondents indicating significantly higher mean scores for all reward categories than White respondents. Finally, a total rewards framework informed by the most prominent preferences for reward categories, was designed.

Adaptive Web Based Module for Learning Unified Modelling Language

Everyone learns differently. Some may find reading useful, but some may find discussing with others help them retain information more effectively. Various approaches have been used by Unified Modeling Language (UML) instructors all over the world to assist students in learning the UML. The normal face-to-face meeting in a classroom for a typical 14-week semester at undergraduate level seems to be insufficient for students to master the subject, as well as to equip them with the knowledge that they can apply after graduating. The objective the work presented in this book is to combine various approaches of teaching and learning UML which is adaptable to individual s learning style and knowledge level.

Effective Green Management

Our planet is continuously under pressure due to irresponsible behavior of human beings of every generation and it is now facing problems in the shape of resources scarcity, green house gases, water pollution and rise in sea level. It is very important to cope up with these challenges now instead of putting coming generations in to trouble and danger. Marketers today are using the phenomenon of green marketing to reduce resource usage, emissions and recycle old products. The concept of green marketing underlies that products/services should be made and fulfil users' needs without any harm to environment, natural resources and living species. According to Authors, there are three key players who can play active role in green marketing/management; these are companies, consumers and government. In this research, the authors conducted empirical study between Pakistan (developing) and Sweden (developed country) and found some amazing findings. Based on those findings, the Authors at the end gave recommendations for effective green management in the region Pakistan (which can also be true for other developing regions).

Mudarabah in Islamic Banking

A Study on Classical Doctrine and Its Contemporary Practice

The contrast between the theory and practice of Islamic banking is generally acknowledged by many scholars. After more than three decades in operation, the rapid growth of the Islamic banking industry is, in reality being driven by the application of the debt-like contracts (e.g. murabahah and ijarah) rather than the profit and loss sharing contracts (e.g. mudarabah and musharakah). As the adaptation of the former contracts creates "unauthentic" Islamic financial products, many have questioned their compliance with shariah principles. The present study analyses this issue by examining the application of mudarabah rules in Malaysian Islamic banking practices. It evaluates the extent to which the current practices fulfil the principles and the ethical framework of the mudarabah contract as propounded by the classical jurists. The study also analyses the justifications of Malaysian shariah scholars for modification of the doctrine, adapting it to the modern banking business.

Biotechnology Adoption

Correlate of University-company Perspectives

How does the quantum of funding, level of knowledge, acceptance and receptiveness, cooperation, transfer of technology and personal characteristics explain the variations in the level of adoption of biotechnology innovations? This book tends to answer this question from the perspective of academic researchers and managing directors of biotechnology companies. The findings are based on a study conducted in Malaysia. The study provides and optimizes a model for transfer and adoption of biotechnology innovations by Malaysian companies. The target population, all of whom responded to the questionnaire, included 98 academic biotechnology researchers and 51 biotechnology company managers. The findings, from the perspective of biotechnology academic researchers and company managers, revealed that the level of adoption of innovations is low in Malaysia. Using all the data above, an optimized model is developed to identify and propose the predictors of adoption of biotechnology innovations in Malaysian biotechnology companies. These predictions can help the country to modify the policies and decisions related to the adoption of the biotechnology innovations.

Phytochemical and Bioactivity Studies of Strobilanthes Crispus L.

Phytochemical Constituents, Antibacterial and Anti-cholinesterase Activities of Strobilanthes Crispus L.

The study shows the phytochemical investigation on the leaves of Strobilanthes crispus L. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated with the aid of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques including GC, GC-MS, EI-MS, IR, UV, 1D and 2D NMR. The extracts and the isolated compounds were tested for antibacterial activity using the micro-dilution antibacterial assay, and anti-cholinesterase activity using the microplate assay.

Heterogeneous Catalysts for Esterification Reaction

Sodium silicate from rice husk ash was functionalized with different silylating agents to produce silica with -CH2-Cl (labelled as RHACCl), -CH2-NH2 (labelled as RHAPrNH2) and -CH2-SH (labelled as RHAPrSH) end groups via a novel one-pot synthesis. Saccharine (Sac) and Melamine (Mela) were immobilized onto RHACCl to form RHAC-Sac and RHAPrMela. The functionalized -CH2-SH group in RHAPrSH was oxidized to sulfonic acid, -CH2-SO3H (labelled as RHAPrSO3H) with hydrogen peroxide at room temperature. The catalysts showed good textural and structural properties. RHAC-Sac, RHAPrMela, RHAPrSO3H, RHA-Blank (as control) as well as homogenous Sac and homogenous Mela were used as catalysts in the esterification reaction. The catalytic activity was found to follow the sequence: RHAPrSO3H > RHAPrMela > homogenous Sac > RHAC-Sac > homogenous Mela > RHA-Blank. The catalysts were easily regenerated and could be reused several times without loss of catalytic activity.
