Global Food Security

Emerging Issues and Economic Implications

Global food security remains at ever greater risk. This is true despite greater concerns and robust actions by world political leaders such as the G8 Summit and other stakeholders worldwide. Pro-active public policies and programs are needed for enhancing food security and ending world hunger and poverty. This book spans the globe presenting leading research in food security and economic implications. Topics discussed include: a systemic approach to food security in agrarian societies; impacts of climate change on agriculture and its implications for food security; impacts of climate change on artisanal fisheries; crop holidays–emerging issues of food security in India; the impacts of HIV/AIDS and household food security; affordable micro irrigation-based vegetable farming for income, employment and food security; informal sector employment and food security; adoption of wheat production technologies; and gender mainstreaming in food security and pro-poor programs. It offers synthesis, lessons, and policy implications for Africa and Asia. This book also provides an exciting agenda for future research and collaboration on the important issue of global food security over the coming years.

A Framework for analyzing socioeconomic, health and environmental impacts of wastewater use in agriculture in developing countries

This paper presents an approach for analyzing the socioeconomic, health, and environmental aspects of urban wastewater use in peri-urban agriculture, using typical characteristics of a major city in a developing country. Peri-urban area of Faisalabad is chosen to represent this context.

in valuation measures, additional problems may arise in assessing various
impacts of wastewater use in agriculture. The use of human capital approach
may be problematic particularly when the cause and effect relationship between
the disease and wastewater irrigation in not known or when the sickness is of
long duration.

Wastewater Use in Agriculture

Review of Impacts and Methodological Issues in Valuing Impacts : with an Extended List of Bibliographical References

The objective of this paper is to provide a review of the characteristics of wastewater used for irrigation, and the reasoning behind the international guidelines presently used in regulating wastewater reuse for agriculture. This paper presents various systems of wastewater treatment available and discusses their benefits and shortcomings. A selective review of recent empirical studies identifies major impacts both positive and negative impacts of wastewater irrigation. Finally, the paper provides the review of environmental valuation techniques for analyzing impacts of wastewater uses in agriculture, and suggest a framework for application of some of these techniques. This framework will be applied to a developing country case study (Faisalabad area in Pakistan), in the ongoing IWMI research program.

Islam and Politics in East Africa

The Sufi Order in Tanzania

Islam and Politics in East Africa was first published in 1980. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Focusing on the interplay of religion, society, and politics, August Nimtz examines the role of sufi tariqas (brotherhoods) in Tanzania, where he observed an African Muslim society at first hand. Nimtz opens this book with a historical account of Islam in East Africa, and in subsequent chapters analyzes the role of tariqas in Tanzania and, more specifically, in the coastal city of Bagamoyo. Using a conceptual framework derived from contemporary political theories on social cleavages and individual interests. Nimtz explains why the tariqa is important in the process of political change. The fundamental cleavage in Muslim East Africa, he notes, is that of "whites" versus blacks. Nimtz contends that the tariqus, in serving the interest of blacks (that is, Africans), became in turn vehicles for the mass mobilization of African Muslims during the anti-colonial struggle. In Bagamoyo he finds a similar process and, in addition, reveals that the tariqas have served African interests in opposition to those of "whites" because of the individual benefits they provide. At the same time, Nimtz concludes, the social structure of East African Muslim society has ensured that Africans would be particularly attracted to these benefits. This work will interest both observers of African political development and specialists in the Islamic studies.

Following these assumptions, I employ a conceptual framework that combines on
the one hand a theoretical perspective on conflict groups and social change—
Ralf Dahrendorf's theory of group conflict—and on the other a microanalytic
model of interest groups- Robert Salisbury's exchange theory of interest groups. I
use both models as heuristic tools, and, therefore, I do not test them in the
technical sense. It may be useful to point out those aspects of both models
relevant to my ...

When you think of the greatest tool the enemy uses against us, it truly is fear. The
Bible says, For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and
of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV). Fear is one of the greatest distractions that
the enemy uses to keep us from doing the things we know God wants of us. How
does that tool of fear relate to finances? Well, I can only tell you what happened
to me. It goes back to watching my family struggle. It wasn't uncommon for us to ...
