A Student Guide to Play Analysis

With the skills of a playwright, the vision of a producer, and the wisdom of an experienced teacher, David Rush offers a fresh and innovative guide to interpreting drama in A Student Guide to Play Analysis, the first undergraduate teaching tool to address postmodern drama in addition to classic and modern. Covering a wide gamut of texts and genres, this far-reaching and user-friendly volume is easily paired with most anthologies of plays and is accessible even to those without a literary background. Contending that there are no right or wrong answers in play analysis, Rush emphasizes the importance of students developing insights of their own. The process is twofold: understand the critical terms that are used to define various parts and then apply these to a particular play. Rush clarifies the concepts of plot, character, and language, advancing Aristotle’s concept of the Four Causes as a method for approaching a play through various critical windows. He describes the essential difference between a story and a play, outlines four ways of looking at plays, and then takes up the typical structural devices of a well-made play, four primary genres and their hybrids, and numerous styles, from expressionism to postmodernism. For each subject, he defines critical norms and analyzes plays common to the canon. A Student Guide to Play Analysis draws on thoughtful examinations of such dramas as The Cherry Orchard, The Good Woman of Setzuan, Fences, The Little Foxes, A Doll House, The Glass Menagerie, and The Emperor Jones. Each chapter ends with a list of questions that will guide students in further study.

Teaching and Learning a Second Language

A Guide to Recent Research and Its Applications

There is increasingly wide agreement among teachers, researchers, inspectors, advisers and policy-makers that both teaching and research will benefit from being brought closer together. But how can this be achieved? Hard-pressed practioners cannot be expected to review a constant flow of conference papers, journals and other publications, even if such items were accessibly written. This unique book synthesizes relevant research findings for the professional practioner and highlights their implications for the quality of teaching and learning. Whether you are a teacher looking to improve your practice or a researcher looking for a concise overview of the literature, this book will prove a valuable acquisition.

Part 1 is a short account of the teaching and research context, both the genetic
research context in England and the foreignlanguage or second-language (L2)
acquisition research context internationally. Part 2 provides an extensive review

Achieving Success in Second Language Acquisition

Aimed at beginning to intermediate undergraduates and above, this textbook is designed to help the student achieve optimal success as a language learner and user. It teaches students to understand their own preferences in learning, develop individual learning plans and approaches, and select appropriate learning strategies. Each chapter contains an overview and review section, with learning activities that students can carry out either individually or in classrooms.

Artificial Intelligence in Second Language Learning

Raising Error Awareness

"The aim of this volume is to cater to a wide range of audiences associated with the field of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). In a true cross-disciplinary fashion it brings together instances of research in second language acquisition, language awareness, computer assisted language learning, artificial intelligence and natural language processing. It is intended for language teachers, students of applied linguistics and language engineering as well as for applied linguists in general."--BOOK JACKET.

Planning and Task Performance in a Second Language

The last decade has seen a growing body of research investigating various aspects of L2 learners' performance of tasks. This book focuses on one task implementation variable: planning. It considers theories of how opportunities to plan a task affect performance and tests claims derived from these theories in a series of empirical studies. The book examines different types of planning (i.e. task rehearsal, pre-task planning and within-task planning), addressing both what learners do when they plan and the effects of the different types of planning on L2 production. The choice of planning as the variable for investigation in this book is motivated both by its importance for current theorizing about L2 acquisition (in particular with regard to cognitive theories that view acquisition in terms of information processing) and its utility to language teachers and language testers, for unlike many other constructs in SLA 'planning' lends itself to external manipulation. The study of planning, then, provides a suitable forum for demonstrating the interconnectedness of theory, research and pedagogy in SLA.
