Find Me

Amanda Gillespie never bargained on seeing Jackson Holstenar ever again. In law school, he was the sexy, rich guy every girl wanted—even her. But they never quite got past the friend zone, and their complicated relationship ended with her being “asked to leave” the law firm where they worked. Now she's got a great legal career and has met the perfect guy . . . who unfortunately happens to be Jackson's good buddy, Carter. Jackson's used to getting what he wants—and he's always wanted Amanda. But he can't betray his friend, no matter how crazy their chemistry. No, he needs to stay far away from Amanda. So why does he find himself offering to help her become his pal's ideal girl? With a little help from fate, these two confused hearts might just find a way back to each other for good. Myth, Metaphor and Science

This book explores the way in which language is used in fiction, poetry and science. It examines the role of metaphor in structuring our thought, and questions any simplistic notion of creativity. There is an enquiry into the significance of myth for the modern writer. Why do our earliest narratives return to haunt us at the end of history? The final essays ask what it means to attempt scientific descriptions of reality in words. Can language here ever be anything more than a clumsy approximation of mathematics. The book ends with a paper written jointly by the particle physicist Goronwy Tudor Jones and Alan Wall, exploring the meaning of complementarity in modern physics, by describing in detail the double-slit experiment.

Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God

A Casebook

The rediscovery of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, first published in 1937 but subsequently out-of-print for decades, marks one of the most dramatic chapters in African-American literature and Women's Studies. Its popularity owes much to the lyricism of the prose, the pitch-perfect rendition of black vernacular English, and the memorable characters--most notably, Janie Crawford. Collecting the most widely cited and influential essays published on Hurston's classic novel over the last quarter century, this Casebook presents contesting viewpoints by Hazel Carby, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Barbara Johnson, Carla Kaplan, Daphne Lamothe, Mary Helen Washington, and Sherley Anne Williams. The volume also includes a statement Hurston submitted to a reference book on twentieth-century authors in 1942. As it records the major debates the novel has sparked on issues of language and identity, feminism and racial politics, A Casebook charts new directions for future critics and affirms the classic status of the novel.

Spatial Determination in the Early Development of Animals

During animal development the descendants of a single cell form many different tissues and organs in appropriate positions within an embryo. To do this they must recognise their position, and this book examines our knowledge of how this is done.

Lessons in Latin Parsing

Containing the Outlines of the Latin Grammar, Divided Into Short Portions, and Exemplified by Appropriate Exercises in Parsing

Parsing Beyond Context-Free Grammars

Given that context-free grammars (CFG) cannot adequately describe natural languages, grammar formalisms beyond CFG that are still computationally tractable are of central interest for computational linguists. This book provides an extensive overview of the formal language landscape between CFG and PTIME, moving from Tree Adjoining Grammars to Multiple Context-Free Grammars and then to Range Concatenation Grammars while explaining available parsing techniques for these formalisms. Although familiarity with the basic notions of parsing and formal languages is helpful when reading this book, it is not a strict requirement. The presentation is supported with many illustrations and examples relating to the different formalisms and algorithms, and chapter summaries, problems and solutions. The book will be useful for students and researchers in computational linguistics and in formal language theory.
