How to Teach English Language Learners

Effective Strategies from Outstanding Educators, Grades K-6

This hands-on book offers teachers a much-needed resource that will help maximize learning for English Language Learners (ELLs). How to Teach English Language Learners draws on two wide-ranging teacher quality studies and profiles eight educators who have achieved exceptional results with their ELL students. Through highly readable portraits, the authors take readers into these teachers' classrooms, illustrating richly what it is they do differently that yields such great results from English learners. Because most teachers profiled work within a three-tiered Response-to-Intervention framework, the book shows how to implement RTI effectively with ELLs—from providing general reading instruction for the entire classroom to targeted interventions with struggling students. Written by noted ELL educators Diane Haager, Janette K. Klingner, and Terese Aceves, How to Teach English Language Learners is filled with inspiring success stories, teaching tips, activities, discussion questions, and reflections from these outstanding teachers.

Patterns of Attachment

A Psychological Study of the Strange Situation

Ethological attachment theory is a landmark of 20th century social and behavioral sciences theory and research. This new paradigm for understanding primary relationships across the lifespan evolved from John Bowlby’s critique of psychoanalytic drive theory and his own clinical observations, supplemented by his knowledge of fields as diverse as primate ethology, control systems theory, and cognitive psychology. By the time he had written the first volume of his classic Attachment and Loss trilogy, Mary D. Salter Ainsworth’s naturalistic observations in Uganda and Baltimore, and her theoretical and descriptive insights about maternal care and the secure base phenomenon had become integral to attachment theory. Patterns of Attachment reports the methods and key results of Ainsworth’s landmark Baltimore Longitudinal Study. Following upon her naturalistic home observations in Uganda, the Baltimore project yielded a wealth of enduring, benchmark results on the nature of the child’s tie to its primary caregiver and the importance of early experience. It also addressed a wide range of conceptual and methodological issues common to many developmental and longitudinal projects, especially issues of age appropriate assessment, quantifying behavior, and comprehending individual differences. In addition, Ainsworth and her students broke new ground, clarifying and defining new concepts, demonstrating the value of the ethological methods and insights about behavior. Today, as we enter the fourth generation of attachment study, we have a rich and growing catalogue of behavioral and narrative approaches to measuring attachment from infancy to adulthood. Each of them has roots in the Strange Situation and the secure base concept presented in Patterns of Attachment. It inclusion in the Psychology Press Classic Editions series reflects Patterns of Attachment’s continuing significance and insures its availability to new generations of students, researchers, and clinicians.

Spiritual Intelligence and Spiritual Common Sense

Have you ever thought about how long it took Satan to influence the first Adam, to turn on God in rebellion, and to deceive Eve in the paradise of God? The age of innocence was lost in an instant after the taking of the forbidden fruit which was “to make one as God” and “to make one wise” knowing the difference between “good and evil”. On that day, mankind’s intellect fell from its spiritual understanding and eternal potential and has been falling ever since, even as worldly wisdom without the knowledge of the Holy Ones has increased. The intellect that was made to be illumined by the Spirit, now in its present fallen state, produces chaos, confusion, and every evil known to man. God’s covering, lost in the garden, can only be restored through genuine repentance and faith in the finished work of Calvary: the sacrifice of the Blood of the Lamb, slain before the foundations of the earth were laid. Spiritual Intelligence and Spiritual Common Sense is based in the unadulterated Word. Evidence of man's delusion of superior intellect without the knowledge of the Holy is the deepest deception. God is not just a god of love, but of justice and righteousness with mercy, because of Christ. He is the God who judges sin, which is moral corruption in any manifested form and under any pretense of the defiant self-will.

The Victory has been won. The War has been won. Our personal battles are won
as we consecrate and dedicate ourselves completely to the Living Word, breathe
by breathe, moment 14 Spiritual intelligence and Spiritual common SenSe.

The Tudor Discovery of Ireland

The rapid acquisition of knowledge about Ireland in Tudor times constituted a discovery of no small importance for the development of the early modern English state. How the Tudors, and the most influential members of the political establishment who served them, came to be acquainted with Ireland - with its history, with its politics and economy, with its people, and with its geography - and how that acquired knowledge was applied is the subject of this book. It includes in its analysis an edition of a previously unexamined 16th-century manuscript - the Hatfield Compendium - as a means of exploring the phenomenon of knowledge acquisition and its relationship to the determination of Tudor policy. The book shows that before the Tudor conquest of Ireland there was the Tudor discovery of Ireland. [Subject: History, Medieval Studies, Renaissance Studies, Irish Studies, Archaeology]
