Snowball the Baby Bigfoot

Can the baby Bigfoot, Snowball, be reunited with his family? At the Secret Animal Society Sanctuary, hidden away in a remote corner of the country, Christmas is approaching. There's lots to organise with the winter weather drawing in, and all the endangered and rare animals to care for. Even fire-breathing dragons need food and shelter! When twins Eddie and Izzie and their family are awakened by two yetis just before the schools break up for Xmas, they realise through sign language that a baby Bigfoot has gone missing. It is starting to snow again - finding a baby animal with white fur is going to be difficult. Eddie, Izzie and their little brother Toby all have to get to school for the end of term costume party so reluctantly they head out and the search continues without them. At school, Toby discovers one of the children crying outside wearing a snowman costume. When the little boy doesn't talk Toby names him Snowball and tries to look after him. It's not long before the teacher realises what's happening and that it's not a child in costume after all! Snowball is taken to the zoo and it's up to Izzie and Eddie, with the help of Beth from the sanctuary, to sort out some quick costume changes and a rescue plan involving a sleigh powered by Cornflake the dragon. . .

Islamic banking

theory, practice, and challenges

Islam has a very specific approach to commercial transactions, the law of contract, interest charges, indeed to the very nature of property. For financial institutions operating in an Islamic environment, or seeking to meet the requirements of communities committed to Islamic law, this poses a variety of problems. This important book investigates how such a challenge can be met in practice. The authors investigate the way Islamic banks work within different economic, financial, social, legal and religious environments. They take the reader through the basic principles involved, the issues that arise, and the difficulties that are often encountered. Drawing on detailed studies of Islamic banking in London, Jordan, Turkey, Malaysia and Pakistan, they provide an understanding of how complex Islamic concepts impact upon the use of financial instruments, commercial priorities and services. Relationships with central banks, comparative analysis of financial statements and the role of Islamic banking in a development context are also covered. Islamic Bankingwill be essential reading to all those involved in the setting up and running of Islamic banking units in western countries, and a key resource for students of economics in the international arena.

Product Development in Islamic Banks

Edinburgh Guides to Islamic Finance is a series of short guides to key areas in Islamic finance, offering an independent academic perspective and a critical treatment. `Essential reading for those interested in having in-depth knowledge of the nature of product innovation and development in Islamic banks... Habib Ahmed offers new ideas in addressing some of the current challenges in a systematic way in this timely book.' Roszaini Haniffa, Professor of Accounting, Hull University Business School, UK Islamic banking began in the 1970s with the aim of providing financial services compatible with Islamic law. Driven by market forces, it has grown rapidly in Muslim countries and in international financial sectors. It is projected to grow at an annual rate of 15-20% and a key factor determining this future growth is the availability of new products that will satisfy the needs of various segments of society. This book shows how the principles and contracts used in Islamic banking and finance can be used to develop financial products. Starting with the basic tenets of Shari'ah and the legal and regulatory environment under which Islamic banks operate, it then discusses the more intricate issues relating to product development processes.

Regulation and Supervision of Islamic Banks

This paper aims at developing a better understanding of Islamic banking (IB) and providing policy recommendations to enhance the supervision of Islamic banks (IBs). It points out and discusses similarities and differences of IBs with conventional banks (CBs) and reviews whether the IBs are more stable than CBs. Given the risks faced by IBs, the paper concludes that they need a legal, corporate and regulatory framework as much as CB does. The paper also argues that it is important to ensure operational independence of the supervisory agency, which has to be supported by adequate resources, a sound legal framework, a well designed governance structure, and robust accountability practices.
