Scriptural Polemics

The Qur'an and Other Religions

A number of passages in the Qur'an contain doctrinal and cultural criticism of Jews and Christians, from exclusive salvation and charges of Jewish and Christian falsification of revelation to cautions against the taking of Jews and Christians as patrons, allies, or intimates. Mun'im Sirryoffers a novel exploration of these polemical passages, which have long been regarded as obstacles to peaceable interreligious relations, through the lens of twentieth-century tafsir (exegesis). He considers such essential questions as: How have modern contexts shaped Muslim reformers' understandingof the Qur'an, and how have the reformers' interpretations recontextualized these passages? Can the Qur'an's polemical texts be interpreted fruitfully for interactions among religious communities in the modern world? Sirry also reflects on the various definitions of apologetic or polemic as relevant sacred texts and analyzes reformist tafsirs with careful attention to argument, literary context, and rhetoric in order to illuminate the methods, positions, and horizons of the exegeses. Scriptural Polemics providesboth a critical engagement with the tafsirs and a lucid and original sounding of Qur'anic language, logic, and dilemmas, showing how the dynamic and varied reformist intepretations of these passages open the way for a less polemical approach to other religions.

In fact, al-Munīr published several translated versions of articles that appeared
previously in al-Manār. 41 Sometimes the editor of al-Munīr requested a fatwā (
opinion on legal issues) from Riḍā to clarify certain contentious issues, including
the question of whether Muslims were allowed to wear Western clothes, which
traditionalist 'ulama in Sumatra vehemently opposed. Apparently, according to
some of these 'ulama, imitating Western clothes and life styles was considered a

Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching

This new edition surveys the major approaches and methods in language teaching.

This second edition is an extensive revision of this successful text.

A Qualitative Approach to the Validation of Oral Language Tests

Language testers have generally come to recognize the limitations of traditional statistical methods for validating oral language tests. They have begun to consider more innovative approaches to test validation, approaches that promise to illuminate the assessment process itself, rather than just assessment outcomes (i.e., ratings). One such approach is conversation analysis (or CA), a rigorous empirical methodology developed by sociologists, which employs inductive methods in order to discover and describe the recurrent, systematic properties of conversation, including sequential organization, turn-taking, repair, preference structure, and topic management. CA offers a systematic approach for analysing spoken interaction from a qualitative perspective, allowing one to make observations about a stretch of talk while at the same time interacting with it. This book provides language testers with a background in the conversation analytic framework and a fuller understanding of what is entailed in using conversation analysis in the context of oral language test validation.

Eighty-five Hebrew as a foreign language students in the U.S. were rated on
these 4 methods by 2 independent raters; her analyses detected the main
difference to be in the fourth test, where candidates reported information instead
of being interviewed; she concludes that 'speech style and topic are significant
factors influencing students' scores on oral proficiency' (p. 537). She suggests (
somewhat contrary to her later opinion (Shohamy 1988)) that the OPI is well

A Functional Approach to Child Language

A Study of Determiners and Reference

A critical exposition of Piaget's views on child language and thought.

18-24, for concise description of the method of critical exploration). These authors
reaffirm that 'the fundamental feature of the critical exploration method requires
that the experimenter constantly formulate hypotheses about the children's
reactions from the cognitive point of view, and then devise ways of immediately
checking these suppositions in the experimental situation'. However, the dangers
of influencing the child do not lie merely in the experimenter's approach but can

A Cognitive Approach to Language Learning

This book addresses issues such as the relation of form to meaning, the relevance of SLA research, and the validity of task-based learning. It also contrasts universalist accounts of language learning and individual differences between learners.

testing. At the outset, though, we will look at the problems of assessment as they
have been conceived by testers themselves. In general terms, a test is a
systematic method of eliciting performance which is intended to be the basis for
some sort of decision making, although this is not to deny that many tests are not
terribly systematic, elicit fairly questionable language performance, and do not
lead to any decisions being made. Testers, in other words, argue for care and

Democracy and Islam in Indonesia

In 1998, Indonesia's military government collapsed, creating a crisis that many believed would derail its democratic transition. Yet the world's most populous Muslim country continues to receive high marks from democracy-ranking organizations. In this volume, political scientists, religious scholars, legal theorists, and anthropologists examine Indonesia's transition compared to Chile, Spain, India, and potentially Tunisia, and democratic failures in Yugoslavia, Egypt, and Iran. Chapters explore religion and politics and Muslims' support for democracy before change.

court clerks acting as brokers).3 The result was a dysfunctional legal system that
consistently failed citizens but served the Suharto government well, providing
almost complete legal impunity for many state actors, in particular military
perpetrators of human rights abuses.4 Daniel Lev's damning account of the
decrepitude of the Indonesian legal system by the end of the Orde Baru (New
Order) suggests the ...

Democracy, Islam, and Secularism in Turkey

While Turkey has grown as a world power, promoting the image of a progressive and stable nation, several policy choices have strained its relationship with the East and the West. Providing social, historical, and religious context for Turkey's singular behavior, the essays in Democracy, Islam, and Secularism in Turkey examine issues relevant to Turkish debates and global concerns, from the state's position on religion and diversity to its involvement in the European Union. Written by experts in a range of disciplines, the chapters explore the Ottoman toleration of diversity during its classical period; the erosion of ethno-religious diversity in modern, pre-democratic times; Kemalism and its role in modernization and nation building; the changing political strategies of the military; and the effect of possible EU membership on domestic reforms. They also conduct a cross-Continental comparison of "multiple secularisms" as well as political parties, considering the Justice and Development Party in Turkey in relation to Christian Democratic parties in Europe. The contributors tackle central research questions, such as what is the legacy of the Ottoman Empire's ethno-religious plurality and how can Turkey's assertive secularism be softened to allow greater space for religious actors. They address the military's "guardian" role in Turkey's secularism, the implications of recent constitutional amendments for democratization, and the consequences and benefits of Islamic activism's presence within a democratic system. No other collection confronts Turkey's contemporary evolution so vividly and thoroughly or offers such expert analysis of its crucial social and political systems.

Japan's victories gave impetus to a renewed interest in racial theory and the
Turkic past among the Young Turks and Ottoman intellectuals. Two Young Turk
journals, the Committee of Union and Progress's official organ Şûra-yı Ümmet
and the intellectual periodical Türk, promoted a new Turkism attributing a
centripetal role to the Turks in running the empire,60 and Yusuf Akçura avowed
that one of the alternatives before the Ottoman state was to “pursue a Turkish

Islam and the Economy of Pakistan

A Critical Analysis of Traditional Interpretation

The book critically examines the question of the ideology of Pakistan and the related claim concerning Islam as a system. The author attempts to discuss the issue in the context of the economy of Pakistan and argues in favour of renewed efforts towards the reconstruction of Islamic thought tomeet the challenge of modernity in the area of economic policy.

Thus, rent and interest become two sides of the same phenomenon. But there is
more to rent than its role as payment for the use of a durable good. It is described
as 'quasi-rent' in the theory of distribution when rent becomes a pure surplus
accruing to the owner of land (or any fixed asset) who has no contribution in its
creation. Economists usually refer to it as unearned income and it is applicable in
a variety of situations. A typical example would be where a business is made
