Sociocultural Theory and the Teaching of Second Languages

L.S. Vygotsky, the renowned Russian psychologist, argued that the true test of any scientific theory is not the contribution that it makes to our understanding of the of the object of study but the extent to which it improves the practical activities of people, including activities that take place in educational settings. The fourteen original chapters included in this volume document innovations in second and foreign language teaching rooted in Vygotsky's theory of cognitive development. Researchers and language teaching practitioners will find implementations at the classroom and programmatic levels of Vygotskyan principles and concepts, including cognitive mediation, the zone of proximal development, activity theory, internatlization, verbalization, and materialization.

Learning and Teaching Genre

This collection examines academic genres - types of writing produced by students in secondary school and college - from the perspective of genre as social action. Such a perspective expands the understanding of what students do when they learn new school genres, of what teachers and institutions do to enhance and constrain such learning, and of what all this signifies for conceptions of writing pedagogy. The book begins with an overview of the reconception of genre study. The essays that follow have an interest in genre, particularly those that appear in educational settings as instances of either student reading or writing. Common motifs recur throughout: questions are raised concerning learning and teaching new genres, the ideological power of genres read and written, and the power of the teacher, curriculum planner, or student to invent new genres or to resist and subvert those that exist. Throughout, the contributors give detailed accounts of successful classroom practices. Learning and Teaching Genre brings recent developments in research and thinking about written genres to the attention of high school and college teachers, and illustrates how that work can effectively inform classroom practice.

Teaching English in Multilingual Contexts

Current Challenges, Future Directions

This collection of innovative, thought-provoking papers discusses contemporary issues, practices and research related to the role and teaching of English in multilingual countries. The papers, written by experienced practitioners in the field from a number of different countries, examine how the English language can be more effectively taught to students in Asia who speak English as their second, third or fourth language. The book will be of interest not only to linguists, language teachers and educators but also to social science researchers involved in exploring the effects language policy can have on education and society at large. The eleven chapters in this book are divided into three sections: multilingual aspects in the teaching and learning of English, code-switching and code-mixing, and assessment. Their authors came to Karachi from different academic, cultural and geographic backgrounds and with diverse experiences of the world of English Language Teaching in order to participate in the Fifth International Seminar hosted by the Aga Khan University Centre of English Language. The contributors are all multi-linguals for whom the question of how best to teach languages is a challenge they face on a daily basis. This small collection of papers is likely to become a powerful resource for English teachers, scholars, and researchers interested in the problems facing language educators in today’s multilingual, multi-cultural world.

Exotic deviance

medicalizing cultural idioms--from strangeness to illness

Exotic Deviance is a seminal study of Western psychiatric interpretations of some of the most bizarre behaviors ever recorded. Robert Bartholomew examines behaviors so strange by modern Western standards that they are assumed to be illnesses or disorders -- latah, koro, and dance "mania". Psychiatrists making these diagnoses draw heavily on Eurocentric values and assumptions. In Malaysia and Indonesia, when startled, ordinarily shy, stolid elderly Malay women will suddenly swear profusely, mimic the gestures of others, and may be induced into "automatic obedience". During this latter state, "victims" of latah will do anything they are told: strip naked in public, slap themselves in the face, or crawl on the floor and growl like an animal. Bartholomew also looks closely at koro-genital-shrinking "epidemics" among men in parts of Asia who believe their penises will disappear. Women are sometimes affected, believing their breasts or vaginas are being sucked into their bodies. A third study looks at the frenzied St. Vitus's dance, which swept across medieval Europe as masses of people joined in public orgies and wild dances.Exotic Deviance examines Otherness with an emphasis on Western understanding and acceptance, explaining that these behaviors are rational outcomes of unfamiliar symbol systems and world-views and are a testament to the power of human imagination and creativity. This book will appeal to psychiatrists, psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists and anyone interested in the diversity of human cultural practices.
