The Ethics of world religions and human rights

These are only a few examples of a more general truth: violations of human rights
in historical and contemporary Islam result not from the universalist message of
the Qur'an but from its corruption by particular traditions, notably from the Near
East ... This implies a triple closing-out: with regard to the past from earlier
wisdom and revelations which are also messages from Allah; with regard to the
future, from any effort to find, starting from eternal principles, ever-new solutions

Beliefs Behind Today's Headlines

The Headlines in our daily papers report news about unknown people in far away places. As often as not, the headlines are negative: "Sikhs Threaten Uprising," "Fundamentalist Muslims in Protest," "Orthodox Jews Clash with Israeli Government." These headlines no more represent the religious realities of the peoples of those lands than headlines about strife in Northern Ireland represent the religious realities of Catholics and Protestants. Still, the headlines do stimulate questions: Who are these people? What are they like? What do they believe? If we are to understand the world in which we live and come to a deeper appreciation and love of others, an awareness of their religious world-view is indispensable. This volume provides a brief summary of the beliefs of Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Shintoism, Taoism and other major world religions in the hope that, by shedding light on them, greater tolerance of their adherents will ensue. Animals and World Religions

Despite increasing public attention to animal suffering, little seems to have changed: Human beings continue to exploit billions of animals in factory farms, medical laboratories, and elsewhere. In this wide-ranging and perceptive study, Lisa Kemmerer shows how spiritual writings and teachings in seven major religious traditions can help people to consider their ethical obligations toward other creatures. Dr. Kemmerer examines the role of nonhuman animals in scripture and myth, in the lives of religious exemplars, and by drawing on foundational philosophical and moral teachings. She begins with a study of indigenous traditions around the world, then focuses on the religions of India (Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain) and China (Daoism and Confucianism), and finally, religions of the Middle East (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). At the end of each chapter, Kemmerer explores the inspiring lives and work of contemporary animal advocates who are motivated by a personal religious commitment. Animals and World Religions demonstrates that rethinking how we treat nonhuman animals is essential for anyone claiming one of the world's great religions.

to animal advocacy. In keeping with the moral outlook established in the Axial

Major World Religions

From Their Origins To The Present

This work seeks to answer questions about the great religious traditions in the contemporary age. It focuses upon those religions that continue to demand the attention of the Western world. Following an introduction on the philosophy of religion, attention is focused on Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam which are religions that have had (and probably continue to have) the greatest number of followers in Western society. In addition to the lasting impact that religion has had in society, we are witnesses to the development of secularism on the one hand and the revival of religious sentiment on the other, thus chapters on modernity, postmodernism, and 'fundamentalism' have also been included. The distinctive feature of the book is its modern feel. Each chapter brings the reader up-to-date with recent developments and commentaries upon recent religious thought, theology and religious-political movements. Moreover, the length of the chapters permits a detailed analysis which is so often lacking in books on world religions.

The Concept of God, the Origin of the World, and the Image of the Human in the World Religions

All religions make statements about God or the Absolute and about "the beginning": about the beginning of the world and the beginning and nature of the human person. Propositions about God, the human person, and the world, statements about God's eternity or process of becoming, about the status and nature of the human person as the "image of God", and about the beginning of the world are woven into "religious speculations about the beginning". The theology, anthropology, and cosmology of the world religions determine the image of the human person and the image of the world in the world cultures shaped by the different religions. They stand in a tense relationship with the anthropologies and cosmologies of modern science, which in turn challenge the religions to deepen their image of the human person. With this volume leading thinkers of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam provide the reader with a first-hand source for understanding the five world religions and their teaching about God, the human person, and the origin of the world.

The speculative philosophy should be sensitively aware of the fact that today,
with regard to religions, cultural-ecological processes of destruction threaten from
at least two directions. In the spirit of modernity, there is still the threat of a ...

A Voyage of Discovery

The Subcommittee on the Catechism (formerly the Ad Hoc Committee to Oversee the Use of the Catechism), has judged that the text falls outside the scope of the types of materials they review for conformity to the Catechism.* The third edition of this highly acclaimed text continues to help young people unlock the doors to 11 of the world's major religious traditions. World Religions falls outside the scope of the types of materials the Committee reviews.
