He was interested in politics and associated with the oligarchic rulers of Corduba
who controlled the city after the fall of the Umayyad dynasty which had ruled
Spain almost since its conquest for Islam beginning in 711 A.D. The poems in the
first third of the Diwan are dedicated to two of these oligarchic rulers: Abu Hazm
al Jahwar and his son Abu Walid. During this period of his life Ibn Zaidun was
involved in a love affair with Wallada, the daughter of the last Umayyad caliph.
