Designing Writing Tasks for the Assessment of Writing

This volume reports the results of a series of investigations of the properties of writing tasks, their authors' intentions, and the responses that these tasks evoked in student-writers and teacher-raters. The volume explains how both student-writers and teacher-raters, in their reading of the same topic/text, can arrive at different meanings. The investigations undertaken led the authors to make a number of recommendations about selecting subjects, specifying audience and mode, formulating instructions, and wording the topic. These recommendations are presented in non-technical language in a comprehensive set of Guidelines for Designing Topics for Writing Assessments.

Translating a Translation

The LXX and Its Modern Translations in the Context of Early Judaism

As part of a Joint Project of Bilateral Scientific Cooperation between the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) and University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), the Centre for Septuagint Studies and Textual Criticism (Faculty of Theology, K.U.Leuven) organised a Specialists' Symposium on the Septuagint Translation. This scholarly meeting took place from 4 to 6 December 2006 at the Leuven Faculty of Theology, Research Unit Biblical Studies. The symposium's aim was to survey contemporary research within the realm of the translations of the Septuagint. Therefore, the most important Septuagint translation projects were confronted with each other, from the perspective of their objective and methodology as well as with regard to their concrete application in particular cases or examples. The meeting was exclusively intended for specialists in the field. The present book contains the proceedings of this symposium. It offers the full text of the contributions by J. Cook, R. Sollamo, H. Ausloos & B. Lemmelijn, G. Dorival, K. Hauspie, C. Dogniez, M. Karrer, W. Kraus, E. Bons, H.-J. Fabry, A. Pietersma, D. Buchner, C. Boyd-Taylor, H. Van Rooy, J. Naude, A. Piquer, P. Translation and Translating in German Studies is a collection of essays in honour of Professor Raleigh Whitinger, a well-loved scholar of German literature, an inspiring teacher, and an exceptional editor and translator. Its twenty chapters, written by Canadian and international experts explore new perspectives on translation and German studies as they inform processes of identity formation, gendered representations, visual and textual mediations, and teaching and learning practices. Translation (as a product) and translating (as a process) function both as analytical categories and as objects of analysis in literature, film, dance, architecture, history, second-language education, and study-abroad experiences. This volume corrects the relative neglect in Second Language Acquisition studies of the quantitative study of language variation and provides insights into such issues as language transfer, acquisition through exposure, language universals, learner's age and so forth.
