Sasak Voice

Speakers' production patterns can clearly be understood as shaped by the structural properties of their specific language(s), and this is also true in Sasak. However, what about when multiple word orders and voice choices are possible? When languages allow for syntactic options, are there universal non-syntactic constraints that exert influence on the production and syntactic coding choices? This dissertation explores potential universal biases identified in literature that has grown out of Bock and Warren's (1985:50) work on Conceptual Accessibility, or the "ease with which the mental representation of some potential referent can be activated in, or retrieved from, memory". The specific biases examined for Sasak in the current work are Discourse Topicality (Givón, 1983), animacy (Branigan, Pickering, & Tanaka, 2008), and noun phrase length (MacDonald, 2013; Tanaka, Branigan, McLean, & Pickering, 2011). Results of a corpus analysis are combined with data from two production experiments, and show that both animacy and topicality affect voice selection in Sasak. Specifically, [+animate] and [+topical] noun phrases are produced earlier in a sentence, thereby affecting the grammatical voice produced. Also, Sasak speakers exhibit a 'long before short' bias (i.e., placing longer noun phrases before relatively shorter ones in utterances), affecting voice selection as well. Contextualized in cross-linguistic data, this supports the argument made in this dissertation that the cognitive effect of the semantic richness and salience of longer nouns is relative to the speaker's stage in planning and producing an utterance.

Moving Image Cataloging

How to Create and How to Use a Moving Image Catalog

Libraries, archives, and museums hold a wide variety of moving images, all of which require the same level of attention to issues of organization and access as their print counterparts. Consequently, the people who create collection level records and metadata for these resources need to be equally conversant in the principles of cataloging. Martha Yee covers both descriptive (AACR2R, AMIM, and FIAF rules) and subject cataloging (with a focus on LCSH). In the process, the reader is encouraged to think critically and to be prepared to make decisions in ambiguous situations where solutions to problems are not always obvious or clearly dictated by specific rules.

First of all, the moving image field follows a number of different standards for
cataloging, including The Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed. rev.,
Archival Moving Image Materials: a Cataloging Manual, and The FIAF Cataloging
Rules.

Through the Seasons with Dulcy

More Favorite Columns by the Oregonian Garden Writer Dulcy Mahar

For more than two decades, Dulcy Mahar invited Northwest gardeners into her world. Through wildly popular columns in The Oregonian, readers came to know the changing three-fifths of an acre of gardens that surrounded her home in Portland's Garthwick neighborhood. Over the years, Dulcy opened her doors for tours, was a top speaker at Northwest garden events and secured a spot in Northwesterners' hearts. Eavesdrop on a conversation with Northwest gardeners and sooner or later someone would say, "Well, Dulcy..." Her death from cancer in 2011 left readers bereft without her weekly column, so it was no surprise how they dove with relief into Back in the Garden with Dulcy, happy to find dozens of her beloved columns and photos of her and her changing landscape. If you are one of her readers who have missed that weekly trip into Dulcy's beautiful gardens, here are dozens more of her best columns. arranged by seasons, Northwest gardeners can once again (or, if you missed reading Dulcy over the years, for the first time) let her guide you through the months. come on. Garden season is calling. Ted Mahar was a film and television writer and critic at The Oregonian for nearly four decades. This is his second book.

Developing Advanced Literacy in First and Second Languages

Meaning With Power

This book addresses the linguistic challenges faced by diverse populations of students at the secondary and post-secondary levels as they engage in academic tasks requiring advanced levels of reading and writing. Learning to use language in ways that meet academic expectations is a challenge for students who have had little exposure and opportunity to use such language outside of school. Although much is known about emergent literacy in the early years of schooling, much less has been written about the development of advanced literacy as students move into secondary education and beyond. Developing Advanced Literacy in First and Second Languages: Meaning With Power: *brings together work on first and second language acquisition and emphasizes the importance of developing advanced literacy in the first language, such as Spanish for bilingual students, as well as English; *spans a range of theoretical orientations and analytic approaches, drawing on work in systemic functional linguistics, genre theory, and sociocultural perspectives; *addresses the content areas of science, history, and language arts; *provides specific information about genres and grammatical features in these content areas; and *presents suggestions for teacher education. What unites the contributors to this volume is their shared commitment to a view of literacy that emphasizes both the social contexts and the linguistic challenges. The chapters collected in this volume contribute in important ways to research and pedagogy on advanced literacy development for the multilingual and multicultural students in today's classrooms. This book is particularly useful for researchers and students in language and education, applied linguistics, and others concerned with issues and challenges of advanced literacy development in first and second languages.

Introduction to Computation and Modeling for Differential Equations

Uses mathematical, numerical, and programming tools to solve differential equations for physical phenomena and engineering problems Introduction to Computation and Modeling for Differential Equations, Second Edition features the essential principles and applications of problem solving across disciplines such as engineering, physics, and chemistry. The Second Edition integrates the science of solving differential equations with mathematical, numerical, and programming tools, specifically with methods involving ordinary differential equations; numerical methods for initial value problems (IVPs); numerical methods for boundary value problems (BVPs); partial differential equations (PDEs); numerical methods for parabolic, elliptic, and hyperbolic PDEs; mathematical modeling with differential equations; numerical solutions; and finite difference and finite element methods. The author features a unique “Five-M” approach: Modeling, Mathematics, Methods, MATLAB®, and Multiphysics, which facilitates a thorough understanding of how models are created and preprocessed mathematically with scaling, classification, and approximation and also demonstrates how a problem is solved numerically using the appropriate mathematical methods. With numerous real-world examples to aid in the visualization of the solutions, Introduction to Computation and Modeling for Differential Equations, Second Edition includes: New sections on topics including variational formulation, the finite element method, examples of discretization, ansatz methods such as Galerkin’s method for BVPs, parabolic and elliptic PDEs, and finite volume methods Numerous practical examples with applications in mechanics, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, chemical engineering, heat conduction, electromagnetic field theory, and control theory, some of which are solved with computer programs MATLAB and COMSOL Multiphysics® Additional exercises that introduce new methods, projects, and problems to further illustrate possible applications A related website with select solutions to the exercises, as well as the MATLAB data sets for ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and PDEs Introduction to Computation and Modeling for Differential Equations, Second Edition is a useful textbook for upper-undergraduate and graduate-level courses in scientific computing, differential equations, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, and numerical methods. The book is also an excellent self-study guide for mathematics, science, computer science, physics, and engineering students, as well as an excellent reference for practitioners and consultants who use differential equations and numerical methods in everyday situations.
