Bu kitap, Merhum Mahmud Es'ad Coşan Hocaefendi tarafından yayın hayatına kazandırılmış olan İlim ve Sanat dergisi ile Panzehir dergisinin, yine Esad Coşan Hocaefendi tarafından kaleme alınmış olan başmakalelerinden oluşmaktadır. İlk sayısı Mayıs 1985 yılında çıkan İlim ve Sanat dergisi, 48. sayısı ile 1998’de yayın hayatına ara vermiştir. Dergi’de iletişimden eğitime, Avrupa Topluluğu’ndan demokrasiye, hukuktan enerjiye, çevreden şehirciliğe pek çok mesele dosya konusu yapılmıştır. Dosyalar ve sair bağımsız yazılar alanlarının uzmanlarınca ele alınmıştır. Dergi, üslûbu, hedef kitlesi, konuları ele alış ve sunuş biçimi ile çeşitli kesimlerin ilgisini çekmiş, o yayın hayatı boyunca bir okul vazifesi görmüştür. Üniversite öğretim üyelerinden, yurt dışında eğitim görmüş elemanlardan, yüksek dereceli idarecilerden, uzman planlamacılardan, olgun şahsiyetlerden müteşekkil, geniş bir ilim ve irfan çevresi derginin hedef kitlesini oluşturmuştur. Başmakalelerde müslümanların sahip olduğu ve sahip olması gereken ilim ve sanat anlayışı enine boyuna işlenmiş; maddî ve mânevî kurtuluş; metotlu çalışmaya, ilmî araştırmalara, dış dünyadaki yenilik ve gelişmeleri dikkatle takibe, yeni ve orijinal, yapıcı ve üretici olmaya bağlanmıştır. Asil ecdadımızın, kahramanlıkta olduğu kadar, ilim ve sanatta da öncü oldukları, hem akla, hem kalbe dayanarak ilerleyip yükseldikleri, kıtalar fethettikleri; maddî ve mânevî değeri yüksek medeniyetler kurdukları fikri işlenmiş; ilim ve irfan, fikir ve sanat çığırı açmaya, tüm insanlığa ışık tutulmaya çağırılmıştır. Ağırlıklı olarak sağlık konularının işlendiği ve 17. sayıdan itibaren Vefa Yayıncılık tarafından devralınan Panzehir dergisi de Mayıs 1991 yılından, Şubat 1998 yılına kadar iki ayda bir okuyucusunun karşısına çıkmıştır. Kimi zaman iki sayısı birleştirilerek yayınlanan dergilerden İlim Sanat için toplam 45, Panzehir için ise 17 başmakale kaleme alınmıştır. Yazılar önce İlim ve Sanat, sonra da Panzehir dergileri olmak üzere kronolojik sıraya göre yayımlanmıştır. Bu şekilde Hocaefendi’nin fikrî düşünce ve mücadelesi, siyasî ve sosyal hadiselere bakışı ile tavrı takip edilmiş olacaktır. Başmakalelerde yer almış ve kaynakları verilmemiş olan âyet, hadis, kelâm-ı kibar ve şiirlerin kaynakları mümkün olduğunca tespit edilip dipnotta gösterilmiştir. Uzun zaman aralığında yazılan yazılar içerisinde kimi kelime ve kavramlardaki yazım farklılıkları giderilerek bir imlâ birlikteliği sağlanmıştır. Sonuna kaynakça ve özellikle araştırmacıların istifadesini kolaylaştırmak için ayrıntılı bir dizin ilave edilmiştir. Ayrıca her yazının başına dipnot olarak künyeleri verilmiştir. Derginin isminden sonra gelen ve romen rakamı ile yazılan rakam derginin cildini, takip eden rakam ise sayısını göstermektedir. Parantez içinde de derginin yayımlandığı tarih yer almaktadır. Keza Panzehir dergisinin de sayısı ve yayımlandığı tarih belirtilmiştir.
