The society of Ibn al-Arif was much liked by men of holy life and persons who had
renounced the world; and an eminent shaikh relates that he saw in his
handwriting a notice on Ibn Hazm az-Zāhiri, in which he said: “The tongue of Ibn “
Hazm and the sword of Hajjāj Ibn Yūsuf were brothers.” His reason for making
that remark was, that Ibn Hazm frequently attacked the ancient and modern
