Growing in Wisdom, Age and Grace

Core course appropriate for grade 9 Growing in Wisdom, Age, and Graceis the foundational core course suggested for ninth graders. In this course the young people explore two themes that hold great appeal and significance for adolescents--personal identity and relationships. The content and strategies in the course help establish the sense of trust and community upon which the entire program can be built.

The primary developmental tasks of younger adolescents include finding out who
they are as individuals and developing healthy relationships along with the skills
for building those relationships. A young person must accomplish these tasks ...

Tradition and Authenticity in the Search for Ecumenic Wisdom

Our emerging world system is bringing the great traditions and cultures it has spawned into ever more intimate and dangerous contact. Langan argues that we must struggle toward a unity of discourse respectful of genuine experiences of varying civilizations if we are to live peacefully on one planet.

Understanding English Grammar

A Linguistic Introduction

Unlike other textbooks, it helps students to understand grammar rather than see it as a set of facts and rules.

Preface. The grammar of a language is a dynamic, constantly changing set of
habit patterns that allows people to ... “Why are there two 'future tenses'?,” “Why
do my students have such a hard time using English motion verbs?,” and so on.

EVOLVE - A Bridge between Probability, Set Oriented Numerics, and Evolutionary Computation IV

International Conference Held at Leiden University, July 10-13, 2013

Numerical and computational methods are nowadays used in a wide range of contexts in complex systems research, biology, physics, and engineering. Over the last decades different methodological schools have emerged with emphasis on different aspects of computation, such as nature-inspired algorithms, set oriented numerics, probabilistic systems and Monte Carlo methods. Due to the use of different terminologies and emphasis on different aspects of algorithmic performance there is a strong need for a more integrated view and opportunities for cross-fertilization across particular disciplines. These proceedings feature 20 original publications from distinguished authors in the cross-section of computational sciences, such as machine learning algorithms and probabilistic models, complex networks and fitness landscape analysis, set oriented numerics and cell mapping, evolutionary multiobjective optimization, diversity-oriented search, and the foundations of genetic programming algorithms. By presenting cutting edge results with a strong focus on foundations and integration aspects this work presents a stepping stone towards efficient, reliable, and well-analyzed methods for complex systems management and analysis.

The overarching goal of the EVOLVE international conference series is to build a
bridge between probability, statistics, set oriented numerics and evolutionary
computing, as to identify new common and challenging research aspects and

Experimental Research in Evolutionary Computation

The New Experimentalism

This book introduces the new experimentalism in evolutionary computation, providing tools to understand algorithms and programs and their interaction with optimization problems. It develops and applies statistical techniques to analyze and compare modern search heuristics such as evolutionary algorithms and particle swarm optimization. The book bridges the gap between theory and experiment by providing a self-contained experimental methodology and many examples.

—Ian Hacking In this chapter we discuss the role of experiments in evolutionary
computation. First, problems related to experiments are presented. Objections
stated by theoreticians, for example, “Algorithms are formal objects and should

Evolutionary Computation 2

Advanced Algorithms and Operators

Evolutionary Computation 2: Advanced Algorithms and Operators expands upon the basic ideas underlying evolutionary algorithms. The focus is on fitness evaluation, constraint-handling techniques, population structures, advanced techniques in evolutionary computation, and the implementation of evolutionary algorithms. It is intended to be used by individual researchers and students in the expanding field of evolutionary computation.

Handbook of Evolutionary Computation

Many scientists and engineers now use the paradigms of evolutionary computation (genetic algorithms, evolution strategies, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, classifier systems, and combinations or hybrids) to tackle problems that are either intractable or unrealistically time consuming to solve through traditional computational strategies. The Handbook of Evolutionary Computation addresses the need for a comprehensive source of reference in the maturing field of evolutionary computation. The handbook is available in a looseleaf print format and an online format.

Evolutionary Computation 1

Basic Algorithms and Operators

The field of evolutionary computation is expanding dramatically, fueled by the vast investment that reflects the value of applying its techniques. Culling material from the Handbook of Evolutionary Computation, Evolutionary Computation 1: Basic Algorithms and Operators contains up-to-date information on algorithms and operators used in evolutionary computing. This volume discusses the basic ideas that underlie the main paradigms of evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategies, evolutionary programming, and genetic programming. It is intended to be used by individual researchers, teachers, and students working and studying in this expanding field.

Building Long Term Strategies and Public-private Alliances for Export Development

The Finnish Case

The Finish case of industrial renewal from essentially natural-resource- based industries toward machinery, engineering, electronics, and ICT is of particular relevance for Latin-American countries. The study explains the crucial role of the finish innovation system and the long-term public-private partnership in the industrial transformation towards a higher knowledge intensity and value added economy. The report recognizes the importance of innovation investments, but estimates as equal essential consistent long term strategies on facilitating conditions to build up, cooperative, confidential and dynamic innovation environment. Long term public-private partnership and broad cooperation within the industry as well as with other industries and the research sector, as exemplified by the "Triple Helix" alliance has been a key factor for economic success in Finland.
