Licking Fingerprints is a recording of chewed thoughts, labyrinthine emotions, and latent disturbances in the form of prose and blank verse poetry. It portrays the intrapersonal conflicts of a woman, raised Muslim, to a Malaysian father and a Korean, previously Christian, mother. She immigrates to the United States, four years after 9/11. Struggling to retain her authenticity, she attempts to balance the need for individualism and the need for conformity in order to sustain her new life in the States. In the context of Malay-Muslim culture, the piece depicts the almost excessive integration of religion into the culture of Malaysian society itself. On the topic of Islam, the piece elaborates on the religion's spectrum of application and its implications.
