Lessons in learning, e-learning, and training

perspectives and guidance for the enlightened trainer

From Roger C. Schank--one of the most highly respected thinkers, writers, and speakers in the training, learning, and e-learning community--comes a compelling book of essays that explore the myriad issues related to challenges faced by today's instructional designers and trainers. The essays offer a much-needed perspective on what trainers do, why they do it, and how they do it. Lessons in Learning, e-Learning, and Training serves as a barometer to the issues that often perplex trainers and helps to illuminate three main points: what can and cannot be taught; how people think and learn; and what technology can really effectively provide. In addition, each essay is filled with practical guidance and includes a summary of ideas, tips and techniques, things to think about, checklists, and other job aids. Praise for Lessons in Learning, e-Learning, and Training "Stories are the jewels of learning and Roger Schank is the prince of storytelling. In this book, Roger reminds us that teaching and learning can be fun and effective. It's like having a long personal conversation with Roger--it's fun, interesting, and illuminating." --Tom Kelly, vice president, Cisco "Roger Schank is a genius, his ideas are insightful, and provocative. Beyond Training

Perspectives on Language Teacher Education

Beyond Training examines the nature of second language teacher development and how teachers' practices are influenced by their beliefs and principles. It seeks to move discussion of language teacher development beyond the level of "training," which reflects a technical view of specific teaching practices. Instead, it takes a more holistic approach to teacher development built on the notion of the teacher as critical and reflective thinker. The argument pursued throughout is that teacher education needs to engage teachers not merely in the mastery of techniques, but in an exploration of the knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes that underly their teaching practices.

Beyond Training examines the nature of second language teacher development and how teachers' practices are influenced by their beliefs and principles.

Living on an Active Earth:

Perspectives on Earthquake Science

The destructive force of earthquakes has stimulated human inquiry since ancient times, yet the scientific study of earthquakes is a surprisingly recent endeavor. Instrumental recordings of earthquakes were not made until the second half of the 19th century, and the primary mechanism for generating seismic waves was not identified until the beginning of the 20th century. From this recent start, a range of laboratory, field, and theoretical investigations have developed into a vigorous new discipline: the science of earthquakes. As a basic science, it provides a comprehensive understanding of earthquake behavior and related phenomena in the Earth and other terrestrial planets. As an applied science, it provides a knowledge base of great practical value for a global society whose infrastructure is built on the Earth's active crust. This book describes the growth and origins of earthquake science and identifies research and data collection efforts that will strengthen the scientific and social contributions of this exciting new discipline.

Active Learning and Student Engagement

International Perspectives and Practices in Geography in Higher Education

This book examines significant issues in geography teaching and learning from the perspectives of an international network of academic geographers and postgraduate students. Drawing on classroom experiences and research in a wide variety of educational settings, the authors describe conceptually interesting and practical applications for enhancing student learning through inquiry, problem-based learning, field study, online collaboration, and other highly engaging forms of pedagogy. Other articles focus on approaches for improving the experiences of distance learners, strategies for enhancing the employability of geography students, and preparing students to engage ethical issues in the discipline. An international audience of educators will find much of value through the use of comparative examples, literature reviews encompassing research in multiple national contexts, and an underlying awareness of the diversity of practices in higher education internationally. This book is a collection of articles previously published in two special issues of the Journal of Geography in Higher Education.

Science and Religion in a Post Colonial World

Interfaith Perspectives

This book explores several issues in the emerging field of science and religion which are of common interest to different religions. The main idea underlying this book is that modern science poses challenges shared by religions. As such, discussing them in an interfaith setting is expected to offer new perspectives to those issues. The first of four parts of the book addresses issues which often have not been discussed in the science and religion discourse - issues around what may be termed 'customisation of sciences'. A form o of such customisation is known as the ideas of the Vedic science, and Islamic science. The secnd part discusses science and the sacred from Islamic and Christian perspectives. Similarly, the third part takes up those perspectives in discussing religious resonse to new theories in cosmology and biology. The book ends with an article about the care of the earth, and the creation of sustainble global community, which is proabbly today's biggest challenge for both religion and science.

Introduction The purpose of this essay is to give a brief introduction to the
theories of evolution, the variety of religious ... and, in conclusion, a survey of
some constructive theologies of evolution prominent among Christian thinkers
today.

Religion in Today’s World

Global Issues, Sociological Perspectives

Religion is a major force in contemporary society. It is also one of the least understood social and political influences on individuals and communities. In this innovative collection of original essays and classic readings, experts explore the significance of contemporary religiosity: as a source of meaning and motivation, how it unites and divides us, and how it is used politically and culturally. Readers will be introduced to the broad debates in ways that will equip them to analyze, discuss, and make their own judgments about religion and society. This book should be read by anyone interested in understanding religion as a central source of meaning and politics, and is ideally suited for undergraduate teaching on religion and social issues and from a global perspective.

The books that have existed up until now offer either a summary of these
perspectives or simply a collection of articles with little connecting information at
all. Religion in Today's World addresses the need for a comprehensive book that
