Sejarawan Tunisia, Utsman Kaak, pada 1970-an pernah mengunjungi perpustakaan pribadi Descartes di Prancis. Secara tak sengaja, ia menemukan naskah terjemahan karya Al-Ghazali dalam bahasa Latin. Ada ungkapan Al-Ghazali yang diberi garis merah oleh Descartes, yakni "keraguan adalah peringkat pertama keyakinan", dan disampingnya ada catatan dari Descartes: "pindahkan ini ke dalam metode kita".
