Chilkoot

An Adventure in Ecotourism

A trail book unlike any other, Chilkoot: An Adventure in Ecotourism is a richly woven insight into the Chilkoot Trail and the region straddling the American-Canadian border in the Alaska and British Columbia. The authors present the trail in three interrelated parts. They begin by describing the trail as a classic example of modern ecotourism with reference to management practices and user expectations, responses, and satisfaction. Then they show the amazing history of the trail. They conclude with an illustrated presentation of their own experiences. The Chilkoot has a long and varied history: it was an important trade route of the coastal Tlingit people; it attracted worldwide notoriety during the frantic Klondike Gold Rush days; and now it has an international reputation among recreational hikers.Today, Chilkoot is an icon. It is thirty-three miles (53 km) of dense forest, rugged mountain, golden sand dune, rushing river, and sylvan lake settings stretching from Alaskan salt tidewater to freshwater Lake Bennett at the headwaters of the Yukon River in British Columbia. Rich in natural and cultural history and protected entirely as parkland, the Chilkoot forms a major portion of the extensive Klondike Gold Rush International Historical Park.

This, too, is the intent of the Chilkoot Trail and other units of the Klondike Gold
Rush National Historical Park — White Pass, Skagvvay Historic District, and
Pioneer Square, Seattle. Norris (1996) describes how the idea of Chilkoot Trail

Ferns and Fern Allies of the Trans-Pecos and Adjacent Areas

Ferns are usually thought of as plants of moist, humid regions, and at first glance the Trans-Pecos region of Texas, a rugged portion of the arid Chihuahuan Desert, does not appear to be a likely location for ferns and their relatives. Yet in many seemingly unsuitable dry habitats, on shadowed slopes, in canyons, and near springs, seeps, and streams can be found sixty-four species of ferns and fourteen species of fern allies. This book is a complete review of the true ferns as well as the related spikemosses and scouring rushes of the Trans-Pecos. In a concise, readable introduction, the authors describe the region, which ranges in topography from desert floors to mountain peaks of over eight thousand feet, and the variations in climate and soils that allow ferns to survive in specific habitats. In clear language they describe the morphology, reproduction, and adaptability of ferns and fern allies. Detailed keys to the Trans-Pecos families, genera, and species allow anyone to identify an unknown fern from the region. The species descriptions give full scientific names, common names, synonyms, and descriptions of locations where the fern can be found, including specific information on their occurrence in Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks. Wherever necessary, the species descriptions provide information on species that may be confused. Other features of the book are a quick identification guide, a checklist of the ferns and fern allies of the region, a glossary of terms, and a list of references. The book is illustrated with detailed line drawings of the habit and details of the plants, and distribution maps with each fern’s description show where the species can be located in the region. This book will be a valuable guide for anyone interested in the plant life of far western Texas and adjacent areas in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Rebuilding Community Identity After Disaster : a Participatory Architectural Approach

The myriad loss due to social, economic, and physical conditions in regions affected by disaster results in the need for both immediate reconstruction and longterm community development. However the lack of conceptual depth in the common short-term, fast response approaches to such crises neglects to address this long-term need. This thesis calls for a new methodology of disaster reconstruction based on sensitivity to individual community needs for physical, psychological, and economic healing. An architectural approach, utilizing local building materials and methods, exposes the potential for design and construction to aid in re-establishing a sense of community and cultural identity. Participation in aspects of design and construction allows victims of disaster to reclaim ownership of their built environment and engage deeper within the bond of their community. This proposal is manifested through the comprehensive design of a training center for micro-credit cooperatives in a tsunami-affected village of Tamil Nadu, India.

The New Form 990

Law, Policy, and Preparation

The New Form 990 covers the law, policy, and preparation of the new IRS Form 990. It includes summaries of the law underlying each of the parts and questions in the return, so that the preparer can understand the background law in formulating answers on the return. The subject matter is particularly timely and relevant given the release of the draft Form 990 last summer, the expected release of the final Form 990 in early 2008, and the commencement of the first tax year to which the form applies on January 1, 2008.
