The impact of the laboratory and technology on learning and teaching science K-16

A volume in Research in Science Education Series Editors Dennis W. Sunal, University of Alabama and Emmett L. Wright, Kansas State University The Impact of the Laboratory and Technology on K-12 Science Learning and Teaching examines the development, use, and influence of active laboratory experiences and the integration of technology in science teaching. This examination involves the viewpoints of policymakers, researchers, and teachers that are expressed through research involving original documents, interviews, analysis and synthesis of the literature, case studies, narrative studies, observations of teachers and students, and assessment of student learning outcomes. Volume 3 of the series, Research in Science Education, addresses the needs of various constituencies including teachers, administrators, higher education science and science education faculty, policymakers, governmental and professional agencies, and the business community. The guiding theme of this volume is the role of practical laboratory work and the use of technology in science learning and teaching, K- 16. The volume investigates issues and concerns related to this theme through various perspectives addressing design, research, professional practice, and evaluation. Beginning with definitions, the historical evolution and policy guiding these learning experiences are explored from several viewpoints. Effective design and implementation of laboratory work and technology experiences is examined for elementary and high school classrooms as well as for undergraduate science laboratories, informal settings, and science education courses and programs. In general, recent research provides evidence that students do benefitfrom inquirybased laboratory and technology experiences that are integrated with classroom science curricula. The impact and status of laboratory and technology experiences is addressed by exploring specific strategies in a variety of scientific fields and courses. The chapters outline and describe in detail researchbased best practices for a variety of settings.

The Spiritual Lives of Bereaved Parents

This book describes how parents lose, find, or relocate spiritual anchors after the death of their child. It describes how ordinary people reconstruct their lives after their foundations have shifted, and how they make sense of their world after one of their centers of meaning has been removed. Klass grounds his descriptions of spirituality in his scholarly study of comparative religions, and in his two decades studying the lives of bereaved parents. He argues that continuing bonds with their dead children can give parents a new transcendent reality. Deceased children, like saints or bodhisattvas, can offer a bridge between the profane and sacred worlds, support parents as they find meaning in a world made forever poorer, and bind together a community adequate to parents' grief. The book reports Klass's clinical practice and his work as advisor to a bereaved parents self-help support group.

Parents'. Pain. "I walk around all day feeling like somebody just kicked me in the
stomach," a bereaved mother said in a meeting. "I just hurt all over, all the time,"
said another. The reality that their child died is inescapable. In the first year, a few

Second Language Acquisition and Linguistic Variation

This volume corrects the relative neglect in Second Language Acquisition studies of the quantitative study of language variation and provides insights into such issues as language transfer, acquisition through exposure, language universals, learner's age and so forth. These studies bolster the idea that a full account of SLA development (and, hence, a “theory of SLA”) must be built on not only detailed accounts of interlanguage data but also on a wide appeal to factors which govern the psycholinguistic bases of SLA. An important addition to the volume is a comprehensive guide to both the DOS and Macintosh versions of the VARBRUL statistical program used by variationists.

The relevance of sociolinguistics to second language acquisition (SLA) is twofold
. First, it is concerned with variation in language — the product, process,
acquisition, and cognitive location of such variation. Such matters are the focus of

The Professional Counselor as Administrator

Perspectives on Leadership and Management of Counseling Services Across Settings

A largely undiscussed problem exists in the counseling community. Each year many excellent professional counselors with little or no administrative preparation or leadership experience are asked to assume administrative roles in schools, colleges and universities, state and federal government offices, community agencies, and foundations. The purpose of this book is to lighten their challenge by providing them with knowledge of the basic tasks and tools needed by a professional administrator and, equally important, how to adapt those tasks and tools to various professional settings. Key features of this outstanding new book include the following: *General Skills -- Chapters 1 and 2 address the meanings of the terms leadership, management and administration, examine the tasks associated with each term, and provide the concepts and skills (e.g., strategic planning, budgeting, recruitment and development of staff, use of technology, etc.) needed by any counseling administrator in any setting. *Applications -- Chapters 3-9 examine the similarities and differences in counseling leadership and management in different settings. The point is made that counseling services are rarely stand-alone structures; typically they are part of larger institutions to which they must demonstrate their contribution. No other book examines how counseling services are adapted to different settings. *Expertise -- Written by three professional counselors who collectively have more than 90 years of administrative experience, this book supplements existing research and scholarship with a wealth of personal experience -- especially on those topics where the published literature is thin. This book is appropriate for the following audiences: 1) graduate students in counselor education or counseling psychology who aspire to leadership positions; 2) practicing counselors entering (or those new to) administrative positions; 3) practicing counselors seeking to understand the institutional settings in which they practice; and 4) counseling administrators seeking an easy-to-use reference volume.
