Oktober 1956 traten B.R. Ambedkar und mit ihm Tausende von Angehorigen der Mahar-Kaste in einer offentlichen Zeremonie zum Buddhismus uber. Mit dieser Konversion hofften sie, den Diskriminierungen, denen sie als Unberuhrbare ausgesetzt waren, entfliehen zu konnen. Diese Massenkonversion ist das Thema meiner Arbeit. Konkret werde ich mich dabei mit den Auswirkungen des Religionswechsels auf die Identitat der Neo-Buddhisten befassen. Identitat wird hier verstanden als eine Kombination aus der Selbst- und der Fremdwahrnehmung, d.h. dem Bild, das eine Gruppe von sich aufbaut und mit dem sich ihre Mitglieder identifizieren, sowie der Sicht, die andere von dieser Gruppe haben. Wie hat sich also das Selbstbild der Mahars nach der Konversion verandert, wie leben sie ihre Religion, und wie werden sie von aussen wahrgenommen? Seit der Massenkonversion im Jahr 1956 wurde sehr viel uber die ambedkarische Bewegung geschrieben. Neben den Ursachen der Konversion und der ambedkarischen Interpretation des Buddhismus befasste sich jedoch nur ein Teil der Forscher mit den konkreten Auswirkungen der Konversion auf das Alltagsleben der Neo-Buddhisten. Meine Fragestellung bezieht sich auf die Mikroebene und ist deshalb auf Feldforschungsarbeiten angewiesen. Ich stutze mich dabei hauptsachlich auf die Publikationen von Johannes Beltz, Jayashree Gokhale und Nerra Burra, die alle in den 80er und 90er Jahren wahrend Forschungsaufenthalten in Maharashtra mit Neo-Buddhisten gearbeitet haben.
