Philosophy of the English-Speaking World in the Twentieth Century 2: Meaning, Knowledge and Value

Routledge History of Philosophy

Volume 10 of the Routledge History of Philosophy presents a historical survey of the central topics in twentieth century Anglo-American philosophy. It chronicles what has been termed the 'linguistic turn' in analytic philosophy and traces the influence the study of language has had on the main problems of philosophy. Each chapter contains an extensive bibliography of the major writings in the field. All the essays present their large and complex topics in a clear and well organised way. At the end, the reader finds a helpful Chronology of the major political, scientific and philosophical events in the Twentieth Century and an extensive Glossary of technical terms.

L'Optique Et LA Catoptrique

This publication of al-Kind 's "Optics" and "Catoptrics" provides "editio princeps" and the first translation of three books including the "Rectification of Euclid's Optics" hitherto unknown. In this book, the reader will find genuine and new information about Greek and Arabic optics and catoptics.

A Translation of Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-kindi's Treatise "On First Philosophy"

A translation and commentary on al-Kindi's "On First Philosophy," a seminal work of early Islamic thought.

THE NAME OF Abu Yusuf Yacqub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi, "the philosopher of the
Arabs", is well known to students of Islamic culture, and recent years have seen a
number of studies devoted to him. We need not, therefore, rehearse in detail the
facts of al-Kindl's life and accomplishments, presented originally by Ibn al-Nadim
and others.1 It is enough to say that al-Kindi was born probably in Kufah toward
the end of the eighth Christian century or beginning of the ninth, during the tenure

The Philosophical Works of al-Kindi

Al-Kindī, honoured as the 'philosopher of the Arabs', was the first philosopher of Islam. His pioneer philosophical writings engage with ideas that became available through the Graeco-Arabic translation movement. This volume makes his entire philosophical output-some two dozen works-available in English, most of them for the first time. An overall introduction, introductions to each work and extensive notes explain al-Kindī's ideas, sources, and influence.

Al-Kindi

An Annotated Bibliography

In his day, al-Kindi (ca. 805-870) was the only philosopher of pure Arab descent, and became known as “the philosopher of the Arabs.” He was one of the first Arab scholars interested in a scientific rather than theological viewpoint, and played a key role in bringing Greek learning into the orbit of Islam. al-Kindi wrote over three hundred fifty treatises, for the most part short studies on special topics in science and philosophy. Nicholas Rescher assembles this annotated bibliography, listing of over three hundred items, to assist students and scholars through the maze of publications related to al-Kindi.
