Story of Islamic Philosophy, The

Ibn Tufayl, Ibn al-'Arabi, and Others on the Limit between Naturalism and Traditionalism

Offers a new interpretation of medieval Islamic philosophy, one informed by Platonic mysticism.

Introduction The story of Islamic philosophy is the story of the development of the
human intellect from the rationalistic phase, represented in this study by Farabi (d
.950)', to an illuminative phase represented by Ibn Tufayl (d.ll85) and Ibn al-'Arabi
(d. 1240)? Illuminative philosophy is based on a model of mystical illumination
that found its best expression in Plato's Seventh Letter and that is illustrated in
Mishkdt al-Anwdr (Niche of Lights) by Ghazali (d. 1111) and al-lshdrdt wa-

A Beginner's History of Philosophy: Modern philosophy

They were but a ragged regiment whose whole ammunition of learning was a
trifle when compared with the abundant stores of a single light of orthodoxy ;
whilst in speculative ability they were children by the side of their antagonists."*
The English deists passed from view at the end of the first half of the eighteenth
century, crushed by the weight of the attack upon them. The more powerful
orthodoxy, with its greater talent, was itself rationalistic, and could beat them on
their own ground.

The History of the Renaissance World: From the Rediscovery of Aristotle to the Conquest of Constantinople

A lively and fascinating narrative history about the birth of the modern world. Beginning in the heady days just after the First Crusade, this volume—the third in the series that began with The History of the Ancient World and The History of the Medieval World—chronicles the contradictions of a world in transition. Popes continue to preach crusade, but the hope of a Christian empire comes to a bloody end at the walls of Constantinople. Aristotelian logic and Greek rationality blossom while the Inquisition gathers strength. As kings and emperors continue to insist on their divine rights, ordinary people all over the world seize power: the lingayats of India, the Jacquerie of France, the Red Turbans of China, and the peasants of England. New threats appear, as the Ottomans emerge from a tiny Turkish village and the Mongols ride out of the East to set the world on fire. New currencies are forged, new weapons invented, and world-changing catastrophes alter the landscape: the Little Ice Age and the Great Famine kill millions; the Black Death, millions more. In the chaos of these epoch-making events, our own world begins to take shape. Impressively researched and brilliantly told, The History of the Renaissance World offers not just the names, dates, and facts but the memorable characters who illuminate the years between 1100 and 1453—years that marked a sea change in mankind’s perception of the world.

She had been Richard II's heiress, and after her death in 1382, her claim had
passed to her son. The upshot was that Henry IV, although popular with his
people, was vulnerable to challenge. And the first years of his rule were
particularly tumultu- ous. Wales had been part of the English empire for over a
century, but now a wealthy Welsh farmer named Owain Glyndwr took advantage
of Henry's insecure crown and called his countrymen to follow him to
independence. Early in 1401, he ...
