Six Cross-curricular Projects that Teach Literacy and Thinking Through Dramatic Play
'Covering The Curriculum With Stories' includes six dramas that deliver individual learning experiences. The dramas provide a fun framework for delivering curriculum content and key skills. They give children the opportunity to identify and develop their learning and thinking styles.
Thursday night I remember less clearly, except that my dreams after the dance
were of empty ballroom floors in splintered moonlight, with the refrain of "Music, Maestro, Please," Kohler's favorite song, going around and around in my head.
"Set in the lively and unpredictable landscape of East Oakland, Masha'allah and Other Stoires brings readers deep into the varied lives of remarkable individuals at the fringes of dominant culture. In each of these nine tales, Young invites us into the worlds of a diverse cast of genuine, hard-working people: we take a ride with a hired driver who gets more than he bargains for with an unusual fare; we meet a day laborer whose search for work leads him to the edges of human sacrifice; we join a plucky house cleaner named Chinta, who sets up impromptu beauty parlors in the houses she cleans. Shining not only with literary power but with eye-opening freshness and honesty, Young's fiction reflects our unflagging allegiances to love, family, luck, and hope."--Cover p. [4].
Be with me. You love me, don't you?” She didn't say that last part, just thought it,
and he didn't answer her, just looked out at the marina. They sat on a park bench,

Books, in the form of children's literature, often served as the means to create figured or "as if" worlds and provided the means for prompting dialogues among members of my family so that we could explore and discuss the cultural tensions and dilemmas that face many transnational families. In particular, one book served as a critical moment in my family's transnational experience. In order to better understand the value of this book as a boundary object, I made use of content analysis to understand the larger themes and document the role of the book, in family discussions as we anticipated our return to Indonesia. The methods of my study as well as the findings I describe may serve to benefit other international students who explore educational opportunities abroad while accompanied by their family. I document the ways in which identities of my family are dynamic and changing in the context of our transnational journeys. The use of books as boundary objects situated at the intersection of geographic, cultural, and emotional boundary crossings may provide transnational families with dialogues to explore dilemmas and tensions. Finally, the process of recording family stories may serve international students and families as they become cultural and linguistic boundary crossers themselves.
