The Brain and Psychology

The Brain and Psychology reports on recent findings of research on the brain. The book is organized into three parts. Part I deals with the organization of the brain, including its structural and its functional organizations The discussions cover the anatomy, physiology, and chemistry of the brain; and the functional organization of the brain (the psychological and behavioral functions of structures in the spinal cord, brainstem, cerebellum, and forebrain, especially the cerebral cortex). Part II describes research on the information-processing systems of the brain. It covers attention and its motivational and emotional controls; visual perception and memory; and a model of language structures of the brain; and cerebral asymmetry in cognitive processes and individual differences in brain function. Part III relates the research on the brain to several problems in psychology as these relationships are perceived by a brain researcher, a developmental psychologist, and an educational psychologist.

Qualitative Research Methods In Psychology: Combining Core Approaches

From core to combined approaches

This book introduces the single use of four widely-used qualitative approaches and then introduces ways and applications of using the approaches in combination. Personal insight into qualitative research practice from each of the contributors covers health psychology, social psychology, criminal psychology, gender studies psychotherapy, counselling psychology and organizational psychology.

In Part 1, we take each method and discuss it in detail in a way that aims to show
how and why you can employ it in your own research. We present some
background to its development and use, and describe various ways in which it is
applied. Typical research questions are described alongside several examples of
its use. Challenges and particular considerations of each method, such as
application, ethics, data elicitation and participant recruitment, are considered.

Hermeneutical Approaches in Psychology of Religion

Contemporary psychology is reviving with new vigor an interest in hermeneutics, or the human science of interpretation. After a period in which positivistic and statistical approaches have been dominant, new methods are being explored. Most of these focus on narrative, cultural analysis, embodiment and interdisciplinarity. Because of its specific object of study, psychology of religion has never been without an hermeneutical emphasis. In this field of psychology scholarship, these new directions are especially welcomed as they offer perspectives for research which attempts to interpret religion as a human phenomenon. This volume presents hermeneutical psychological studies on religion which rely on both classical and contemporary approaches. Dealing with topics like mysticism, religious symbols, life stories and mental health, contributions to the volume draw on a variety of perspectives. These range from psychoanalysis, narrative psychology and feminism to perspectives drawn deep from the wellspring of interdisciplinary collaboration with anthropology and history.

The Social Psychology of Experience

Studies in Remembering and Forgetting

As their argument unfolds, the authors reveal that memories do not solely reside in a linear passage of time, linking past, present and future, nor do they soley rest within the individual's conciousness, but that memory sits at the very heart of 'lived experience'; whether collective or individual, the vehicle for how we remember or forget is linked to social interaction, object interaction and the different durations of living that we all have. It is very much connected to the social psychology of experience.

Exploring the Psychology of Interest

Psychologists have always been interested in interest, and so modern research on interest can be found in nearly every area of the field: Researchers studying emotions, cognition, development, education, aesthetics, personality, motivation, and vocations have developed intriguing ideas about what interest is and how it works. Exploring the Psychology of Interest presents an integrated picture of how interest has been studied in all the wide-ranging areas of psychology. Using modern theories of cognition and emotion as an integrative framework, Paul Silvia examines the nature of interest, what makes things interesting, the role of interest in personality, and the development of peoples idiosyncratic interests, hobbies, and avocations. His examination reveals deep similarities between seemingly different fields of psychology and illustrates the profound importance of interest, curiosity, and intrinsic motivation for understanding why people do what they do. The most comprehensive work of its kind, Exploring the Psychology of Interest will be a valuable resource for student and professional researchers in cognitive, social, and developmental psychology.

Gordon Allport (1937, 1961) proposed a theory of functional autonomy in an “
attempt to escape the limitations of uniform, rigid, abstract, backward-looking
theories, and to recognize the spontaneous, changing, forward-looking, concrete
character that much adult motivation surely has” (1961, pp. 226–227). Functional
autonomy refers to a transformation process whereby a motive splits off from an
extrinsic motivational source and becomes self-sustaining. A young boy, for
example, may ...

Understanding and Using Statistics in Psychology

A Practical Introduction

`There are few people who can write about research methods in a lively and engaging way, but Miles and Banyard are amongst them. As well as being an exceptionally clear introduction to research methods, it is full of amusing asides and anecdotes that make you want to read more. A hugely enjoyable book' - Dr Andy Field, University of Sussex Understanding and Using Statistics in Psychology takes the fear out of psychological statistics to help students understand why statistics are carried out, how to choose the best test and how to carry out the tests and understand them. Taking a non-technical approach, it encourages the reader to understand why a particular test is being used and what the results mean in the context of a psychological study, focusing on meaning and understanding rather than mindless numerical calculation. Key features include: - A light and accessible style - Descriptions of the most commonly used statistical tests and the principles that underlie them - Real world examples to aid the understanding of why statistics are valuable - Boxes on common errors, tips and quotes - Test yourself questions The perfect introductory resource, Understanding and Using Statistics in Psychology will guide any student new to statistics effortlessly through the process of test selection and analysis. Optional. Extra. Interestingly (well, we think it's interesting), Bonferroni didn't have
a greatdeal to do withBonferroni correction. The proofrequired for Bonferroni
correction relies on Boole's inequality (which Bonferroni extended, but this
extension wasn't needed for Bonferroni correction). It was actually first applied by
Dunn (1961) andhence issometimes known as Dunn'scorrection. Thisisa further
