Kesusastraan rakyat menjadi bagian penting dalam dinamika perkembangan sastra pada umumnya. Untuk itu, menggali dan memahami kesusastraan rakyat menjadi salah satu keharusan bagi generasi muda, melalui kesusastraan tersebut generasi muda bisa memahami nilai-nilai kebijakan, sejarah, dan pengalaman hidup. Mata kuliah folklor merupakan salah satu mata kuliah yang menawarkan pemahaman tentang khasanah kesusastraan rakyat baik yang bersifat lisan, sebagian lisan, dan bukan lisan.
