Indonesian Islam in a New Era

How Women Negotiate Their Muslim Identities

Indonesian Islam in a new era examines the religious practices and identities of Indonesian Muslim women in the post-Suharto era. After 1998 Indonesian Islam changed socially and nationally as society underwent sweeping alterations. Based on new empirical research by sociologists, political scientists, and anthropologists from Indonesia and Australia, the book underscores the negotiations Muslim women have made in arenas such as schools, organisations, popular culture and village life. Whereas theology has until recently dominated studies of women and Islam in Indonesia, this book breaks new ground by examining from social science perspectives how Indonesian women negotiate their Muslim identities.

The Standardization of Mustalah Al-hadith in the English Language

English literature on Mustalah al-Hadīth is published in order to address the religious and academic needs of Muslims and non-Muslims, but it lacks a standardized approach when dealing with the original Arabic terms related to the genre. This lack of standardization causes several problems that hinder the development of Hadīth literature and affect the understanding of the English reader. This research investigates the two different approaches used in dealing with Hadīth terminology in the English language, namely translation and transliteration. It analyzes the merits and demerits of each approach and evaluates the most appropriate method in dealing with the terms and concepts of Hadīth in the English language. It concludes with suggested resolutions to the problems arising from a lack of standardized Hadīth terms in the English language that aim to further enhance Hadīth literature and studies beyond the Arabic language by developing a proper understanding of Mustalah al-Hadīth as it was presented in the works of early Hadīth scholars, such as Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalānī (d. 852H).

The McDonaldization Thesis

Explorations and Extensions

In this major new book, the author of the bestselling McDonaldization of Society provides an exploration of one of the most innovative and imaginative sociological theses of the last decade of the twentieth century - `McDonaldization'. Part One centres on a discussion of Karl Mannheim's theory of rationalization. The author also assesses the degree to which sociology in general and sociological theory in particular have been `McDonaldized'. The second part demonstrates the empirical reach of the `McDonaldization' process with discussions on work, credit and globalization. Part Three moves beyond `McDonaldization' to the worlds of `new means of consumption' and the postmodern perspectives that best illuminate them. The author

Islam and Literalism: Literal Meaning and Interpretation in Islamic Legal Theory

Literal Meaning and Interpretation in Islamic Legal Theory

In this reading of Islamic legal hermeneutics, Robert Gleave explores various competing notions of literal meaning, linked to both theological doctrine and historical developments, together with insights from modern semantic and pragmatic philosophers. Literal meaning is what a text means in itself, regardless of what its author intends to convey or the reader understands to be its message. As Islamic law is based on the central texts of Islam, the idea of a literal meaning that rules over human attempts to understand God's message has resulted in a series of debates amongst modern Muslim legal theorists.

It is not necessarily germane to my purpose here to rehearse the arguments
which have dominated the field of early Islamic legal studies.1 It is important to
note, however, that prior to the writings of al-ShÁfiÝÐ, there is very little evidence
of any explicit interest in legal theory. By this I mean that the extant texts of early
Islamic jurisprudence contain many references to and refutations of the opinions
of the great scholars of the early period, but there is little discernible systematic

fear that Mr Sherlock Holmes may become like one of those popular tenors who,
having outlived their time, are still tempted to make repeated farewell bows to
their indulgent audiences. This must cease and he must go the way of all flesh,

children of imagination, some strange, impossible place where the beaux of
Fielding may still make love to the belles of Richardson, where Scott's heroes still
may strut, ...
