Object-oriented Programming with Java

An Introduction

For an undergraduate course in Object-Oriented Programming or a course in Intermediate Java Programming. Appealing to programmers and non-programmers alike, this complete introduction to Java shows students how to use this versatile and popular object-oriented programming language as a primary tool in many different aspects of their programming work (not just for creating programs with graphical content within Web pages), and includes complete descriptions of the fundamental elements of Java with step-by-step instructions on how to compile and run a program. Well-organized, clearly written, and visually engaging, it gives students real hands-on experience as it guides them through all of Java's functions and capabilities reinforcing their understanding with periodic reviews and helping them see Java's everyday applicability through many interesting case studies. Emphasizing the importance of good programming style particularly the need to maintain an object's integrity from outside interference it teaches students how to harness the power of Java in object-oriented programming, and enables them to create their own interesting and practical every-day applications.

This comprehensive text shows readers how to use such a versatile object-oriented programming language as a primary tool in many different aspects of programming work. It is designed primarily as a first programming text.

Object-Oriented Programming and Java

Covering the latest in Java technologies, Object-Oriented Programming and Java teaches the subject in a systematic, fundamentals-first approach. It begins with the description of real-world object interaction scenarios and explains how they can be translated, represented and executed using object-oriented programming paradigm. By establishing a solid foundation in the understanding of object-oriented programming concepts and their applications, this book provides readers with the pre-requisites for writing proper object-oriented programs using Java.

Faculty Research Performance

Lessons from the Sciences and the Social Sciences. ASHE-ERIC Higher Education Report No. 4, 1985

The literature on faculty research performance is reviewed, with a focus on research by individual faculty members. The literature on the sociology of science and data-based results from sociological studies are emphasized. Attention is directed to measures of performance, the explanations and specific correlates likely to influence high research performance, and the practical implications of empirical studies for faculty development and evaluation. Three common measures of individual research performance are publication counts, citation counts, and peer and colleague ratings. Productivity researchers attempt to explain the variation in faculty research performance by psychological-individual factors, including superior intellectual ability, a strong motivation and drive to perform, personality traits, and background characteristics. Access to resources and advantages and reinforcements have also been linked to productivity. Additional correlates of productivity have also been investigated: prestige of doctoral program and employing institutions, rank and tenure, early productivity. Numerous correlate studies in the past 40 years have resulted in a profile of productive researchers. In addition to ideas to promote faculty development and evaluation, suggestions for future research of faculty research productivity are offered. Ten pages of references and an index are provided. He also presents the key elements of the research process, giving specifi c attention to each approach. The Fourth Edition includes extensively revised mixed methods coverage, increased coverage of ethical issues in research, and an expanded emphasis on worldview perspectives.

Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design

Choosing Among Five Approaches

In the revised Fourth Edition of the best-selling text, John W. Creswell and new co-author Cheryl N. Poth explore the philosophical underpinnings, history, and key elements of five qualitative inquiry approaches: narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study. Preserving Creswell's signature writing style, the authors compare the approaches and relate research designs to each of the traditions of inquiry in a highly accessible manner. Featuring new content, articles, pedagogy, references, and expanded coverage of ethics throughout, the Fourth Edition is an ideal introduction to the theories, strategies, and practices of qualitative inquiry.
